24.2.2012 Magnetic Island

We had a 7 a.m bus to Townsville so we were up and out early. We got off there and had to get a ferry over to Magnetic Island from there. At the port we saw hundreds of Aboriginals, we havn’t seen many upto now. We stayed at the Base hostel which was actually quite nice. Right on the beach, wooden bungalows, pool, bar etc. We chilled out by the pool for the afternoon, Sophie finished her book (The Spire) which she said was good. Oh and we saw our first possum , in the bin whilst we were eating our tea.

We had such a fun day today. Started off badly though as we had 2 Auzzie lads in our dorm and they were complete idiots. After a few drinks they started being rowdy and noisey for no reason while everyone was trying to sleep. So Sophie woke up grumpy due to the lack of sleep so I sent her to the hammocks to try and get a couple of hours in before we went the koala sanctuary. After lunch we got the bus the sanctuary on the island. It cost $21 and an extra $10 to cuddle a koala. It was probably the best $31 we have spent. We had a guide taking us round explaining everything about the animals. We got to hold a 6yr old crocodile, a black cocatoo which we fed seeds out of our teeth. It was very gentle. We saw a long haired southern wombat which we learnt that it was more endangered than a koala bear. We then got to hold Matilda, an 18 month old koala bear. She was so cute and gentle with you. She clung onto you like you were a tree. She was so soft and warm. They told us all about them, that they only live till there 10 and they only move at night when its cooler. Then we got to hold a carpet python around our necks. Sophie was petrified but I made her do it to conquer her fear! We then held few different types of lizard and a Mrs Turtle. We thought that was it for the day, but they then asked us if we wanted to go and feed the lorikeets. The guys went to get the food which was soggy bread, then all of a sudden hundreds of these birds came from knowhere and started going baserk for this food. You would pick a handful up and you would have 10 birds on your hands, arms, shoulders and head! We were covered in poo and scratches! We got back the hostel had a good shower then got ready for the night bus to Cairns. M x
