Our group in front of our macho 4x4!
Well, we survived!!

Today after a long recovering night of sleep we thought we'd give a quick update of the last few days on the largest sand island in the world - and also Jill's birthday!

What i thought would be a macho 3 days of driving a 4x4 was slightly dampened by the fact the jeeps were painted bright PINK!! This was so they could be easily identified (and they could definitely be) apparently!

The first day (Sunday) we did the group shopping and faced a race against time to get to the barge due to some key problems! I then had to reverse park the 4x4 on the barge at breakneck speeds to keep the not so friendly barge staff from screaming at me - this was a terrifying experience! We then heading along the sand tracks down to the beach - with the call of 'BUMP' warning the passengers in the back thay they might be about to be launched roofwards! This was great fun (the driving part not the head bumping!)
We then headed to Lake Wabby and after a 40min walk spent the rest of the afternoon lounging in the fresh water lake
Happy birthday to you!Happy birthday to you!Happy birthday to you!

Jill during the surprise party, looking slighty scared!
and having our feet nibbled by fish - a nice feeling, if slightly unusual!
After that it was off to find an area on the beach to camp. This was when we experienced our first bogging! Luckily we managed to free the 4x4 (with the help of the other group we were travelling around with), before we set up camp. This included having to dig a toilet hole in the bushes due to the lack of 'facilitities' much to the dismay of some of the ladies!
Dinner was a lovely bbq and some even lovlier cold beer!

On Monday we drove along the beach to Indian Heads and watched Tiger Sharks and Sting Rays swimming below the cliffs in the clear water before heading down to the beach for a dip in the shallows behind the safety of a sandbank (not too far out due to the wild life we had just seen!). Then it was back down the beach for some photos at the Pinnacles (large multicoloured sand cliffs) and a stop at a ship wreck (more photos).
We then set up camp and wandered down to Eli Creek for our evening wash, which was cool because we
The party continues! The party continues! The party continues!

The final five after far too much goon!
walked along a boardwalk and were then washed back to the beach by the current!
As it was Jill's birthday, we scared the living daylights out of her by surprising her in the evening with a birthday cake (with candles that after eventually lit were extinguished by the wind before the birthday girl could blow them out!), sparklers, party poppers and a rousing rendition of Happy Birthday. All this seemed a little too much for a surprised Jill who sat looking very scared by the bright lights and mini explosions! This will be no surprise to those of you who know Jill but she had no idea i'd planned it all with the help of the two groups even though she'd seen the bag with the cake in and not wondered why i'd asked her to come and protect me from the dingos while i visited the bushes (allowing preparations to take place!).
That night we also saw our first dingo (as i came from the bushes on a separate occasion) which was actually pretty unnerving. We also celebrated Jill's birthday in style (with some help from the North American contingent and they're keg antics - we're still recovering!)

On Tuesday we rather groggily got up and headed up to Lake Mckenzie which is a spectacular fresh water lake with beautiful white sand and clear sparkling water for a wash and swim before heading back to the barge and the main land!

It was a fantastic few days that will definitely be a highlight of our year and hopefully a memorable place for Jill to spend her birthday

Just saying hello
Hi Guys, have finally caught up on your blog! Sounds like you guys are having a totally great time and I have to say I may be a little jealous. Too think you might be missing the weather, the working day, driving on our roads was clearly wrong of me! Will you ever come back? Can't say I would blame you if you didn't. Jonny, your mum is ok, we keep an eye on her here for you and leave your brother and Reg to do that at home. I am off to the US with your mum next week, so will promise to take good care of her for you. You know the address to send th cheque! Anyway, no marathon fo rme this year or any other year, though the Sydney marathon would be a good meeting point, don't you think? NOT!!! Take care of yourselves, keep safe and will speak soon. Happy New Year to you both. Russell and family x
