Tuesday 21st December
Its only about two hours back up North to the Gold Coast and we are looking forward to visiting the nice beaches of Surfers Paradise.
We've arrived at an area at Gold Caost called Southport which is about 5 km outside Surfers Paradise which is perfect as the main town area of Surfers isnt that great as its mainly shops and food halls and actually looks and feels like Tenerife!
We'll take a day visit into town later on the week if we are bored.
We checked in and get our beachwear on as the weather is terrific and we must make the most of the sun while its out as the weather forecast is pretty poor for the next three or four days.
We have a private room to ourselves which is cool as the YHA here is really nice and its located in a quiet area by the marina with excellent views.
On the beach its great as its not too busy and theres a breeze drafting through and keeping us cool. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see in both directions and we can see the high skyscrapers of
surfers paradise in the distance.
We went for a dip in the sea to cool off and its actually warmer than you think ands its not very deep for the first 50 metres as you wade out. The waves are massive and are occasionally four to five foot in height and its a challenge to keep stood upright.
There are some people body boarding nearby and also the odd surfer so we had to keep on our toes and make sure we didnt get in anyones way.
We spent most of the afternoon on the beach before heading home and when It started getting dark we treated ourselves to a fine fish and chip supper down at the nearby Fishermans wharf.
Wednesday 22nd December
We woke up to miserable weather and its that kind of rain that you cant do anything in so we spent a day doing nothing but watching TV and researching future tours in Asia which isnt that away for us now. We arranged to meet our Irish friend Aoife for a drink tomorrow which we are looking forward too as theres another girl we know from our Whitsundays tour going to be there.
Thursday 23rd December
No change in the weather today so we brave the rains and jumped aboard a bus into Surfers Paradise to do some food shopping. The town is a tourist trap to be fair as everything is far more expensive than other towns we've been too in Oz. The rain cleared a little and we manage to go down onto the beach area of Surfers to see what all the fuss was about and its actually a very nice large beach with huge waves as you would expect. The Q building is near by which is the tallest residential building in Oz and they wanted to charge us $20 just to go up the lift into the observation deck which we chose not to do.
We did our food shopping and hauled home for dinner and got ready to meet our friends for a few beers. Another bus later and we were back in Surfers Paradise and at a bar near to the bus station where we met our chums and had a few beers. The rain was getting heavy and we caught the last bus home around 11 and packed our bags for leaving to
Brisbane tomorrow. Its sounds like we're in for a wet Xmas up in Brisbane as theres storm warnings in Queensland.
Friday 24th Decemeber
Well its Xmas eve and it doest really feel like xmas for us as we are missing home badly today. Normally we'd be stuffing our faces with marzipan filled dates mince pies and truffles! If only we could home for a day or two. 😞
We left the Gold coast on the greyhound bus and it pretty much rained all the way up the road to Brisbane but at least we know we are heading for a nice yha hostel.

Welcome Rain
I hope you enjoyed your rainy spell and reminded you there is a real world out there, in the meantime thanks so much for your thoughtful post card, it is a lovely change to have a hand written message, it gives a sense of real human contact, especially when beautifully penned, we asumed by Jill. Now well into the New Year and it all seems a tad sureal that you are actually doing it all, so if I feel that way, I guess your off the planet. Try not to worry about us, we can make do with Europe! Love from us.
