I arrived into Sydney with a flight up to the Gold Coast early the next morning. I dropped my bags at the desk and decided to spend the day in town rather than sitting in the airport where I was going to spend the night. I got the train to Museum station, found my hostel where I will be staying upon my return to Sydney and went down to the Quay for lack of any better ideas. Weather was clear and the walk was not as far as I had expected and by lunch I was looking out at the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and surroundings. I arranged to meet Angus and Emily briefly as they were in town and met them at an anti police demo outside the parliament building having taken brief shelter in the hilton lobby during a 10 minute monsoon. After some more aimless wondering I headed back up towards Museum and my return train with a vague idea of Sydney now in my head... ready to explore when I'm back.
After an night on the terminal floor I woke early, decided I couldn't afford breakfast (a tiny sausage roll was $9) and checked in for
my flight. I'm sure there would have been a nice view as we flew up the coast, but I was busy catching up on lost sleep. I met Ben at the arrivals in GC and we went back to his house in Bundall; about a 10 minute drive from the coast. When he went into uni he dropped me off at the beach on what was to be my only rain free day so far and I spent a great day surfing and generally lying about doing not a lot, exactly what I needed. It has been extrememly nice to have a few home comforts; a decent bed (and pillow), home food, decent shower and TV. We spent a few nights out sampling what the GC as a studenty area has to offer and were unfortunately limited during the day due to the heaviest rain in the area for 3 years, fingers are crossed that it will improve as I head up to Brisbane tomorrow.
