Wreck Rock Beach
A lovely spot to camp Tried to do the walk at Water Creek Park before leaving, but we were mobbed by mozzies going from the carpark across the grass, so gave up. Looked around Yeppoon on the way out to Rockhampton and drove down and into Gladstone. Not much to see in Gladstone, except the coal loading facilities at the wharf and the alumina smelters. Drove out to Agnes Waters and the Town of 1770 - very nice views with a caravan park right on the beach at 1770. Continued on to Deepwater National Park, it is right on the ocean. One camp (Wreck Rock) had toilets, but a long way off the beach. Had to book by phone or online before camping, so we drove out towards Bundaberg and camped at Sharon Nature Park at the side of the Gin Gin road. A free camp and the kids got everything out ready for tea, while we were talking with our neighbours. Amazing!
Drove out to South Kolan to see the Mystery Craters. Looking a bit run down, but quite impressive all the same. Not sure how they are formed (dinosaur, meteor??) part of the rock is ochre which is normally found in Central and
Western Australia. Had lunch in Bundaberg and went to Repco & SuperCheap Auto to get a replacement jockey wheel for the camper, ours has broken it’s bearing. Through Childers and into Hervey Bay. Stopped at Info Centre and booked our Camping and Vehicle Access Permits for Fraser Island. Booked into a Big4 caravan park with power and ensuite to charge up before Fraser. Did washing, had late tea and updated Alex’s blog. Rod & Kate played on the bed while Alex & I were on the computer. By the time we were finished, Kate was so wound up and overtired she didn’t want to go to bed. She conned Rod into getting in her swag with her for a “few” minutes. Well after 3 attempts and 1 hour, I gave up and went to bed. Rod came to bed some time during the night.
Got our groceries in the morning and back to caravan park to repack ready for the trip to Fraser. Went to Bunnings for washers to fix old jockey wheel and found out we had missed the morning barge to Fraser. Oh well, drove along the Esplanade, went to the bank, had lunch and the kids
had a play on the fitness equipment and back to River Heads. Rod sprayed the car with Lanolin to help prevent rust on the car and camper - only time will tell. Ticket for barge with car, trailer and 4 passengers was $215. Talk about a rip off! They have it all sewn up. Kingfisher Bay owns the Resort, tour buses, 2 barges and who knows what else on Fraser Island and they know how to charge. Had to wait for 10 minutes for the local policeman to turn up. It was his day off and he obviously had to catch the last barge. Seas were rough, so they had to push off from the ramp and come back for the policeman. Chatted to one of the Rangers on the barge, Keith, who recommended we stay at Central Station at this time of night (no need to book, not busy) and wait until we decide where to camp, there or another campground or on the beach. We decided to take his advice as it was getting dark in the tall forest of inland, so set up in Central Station - Satinay Campground just opposite the showers and toilets. Showers are
$1 each, but are nice and hot! Only 3 other camp sites being used, so it was quiet. There are 3 Japanese tourists opposite our camp and the kids started a game with the torch/laser given to them by Richard and Di. The Japanese thought it was a hoot and joined in with their torches and hiding behind trees, chairs, car and jumping out at the kids.
