The BEST burger of the trip! (so far)
From the 'healthy' burger shop so how could we resist! Just a quick blog to let you all know what we’ve been upto and some more pics before we head to Asia on Saturday. Due to being totally exhausted after getting the overnight (impossible to sleep on) bus it’s going to be a short one!
Our first destination in Australia was Brisbane, we were both sad that our time in New Zealand had come to an end but also looking forward to the sunny weather and sights of the east coast. We met up with our good friend Vkki in Brisbane so we spent a few days catching up and generally chilling out. It was quite strange that the first beach we visited in Australia was Brisbane’s ‘fake’ beach. I didn’t know quite what to expect as the only artificial beach I’d been to before was the mud flatt in Grimsby but we were both really impressed, it’s a huge crystal clear lagoon surrounded by soft white sand. We didn’t have much of a plan when we arrived in Australia so we headed to the travel agent for some advice on what were the must do’s and came out with everyday planned until we lave for Asia! It’s been a
hectic two weeks but great fun!
Our first stop after Brisbane was Noosa (home of the amazing burger)! We only had two days there which we spent doing some more sunbathing and looking for the elusive Koalas! Despite doing the 2 hour coastal koala walk and looking in every tree on the way we still didn’t manage to stop one and a bit like the kiwi in New Zealand the closest we came to seeing a real one was on a road sign! Han thought she spotted one in Airlie beach the other day but it turned out to be a dog, an easy mistake to make!
After Noosa we jumped back on the bus to Rainbow beach ready for our tour to Fraser Island. We opted for the cheapest option which was the self drive we met up with 9 other people and were ready to set off the next morning. We had a really lively group and it turned out to be a great three days. Everywhere we went in Fraser island was beautiful and unspoilt, especially Lake Mackenzie which the nicest beach I’ve ever seen! The water was so clear it was the perfect opportunity
to use the underwater camera - with varying degrees of success!! We camped with loads of other groups of people on the self-drive tour and the trucks had big stereo systems so the nights were really good fun and everyone was drinking the mandatory east coast drink of goon - the UK equivalent of cheap boxed Lambrini! After the tour we headed back to Rainbow beach for the night before our mammoth 19 hour bus journey to Airlie beach the next day.
By the time we arrived in Airlie we were exhausted with no idea what day of the week it was or where we really were, we couldn’t check into our hostel for hours after arriving so after hearing on the radio it was national ‘non-diet day’ we decided to get into the spirit of it and spend the afternoon indulging in ice cream etc and then went out for a proper meal in the evening, a welcome relief after all the weeks in New Zealand of eating only pasta, tomatoes and carrots!
The next day it was time for sailing! After the seasickness incident of the dolphin swim I was fully prepared and dosed up to
the eyeballs with motion sickness tablets before we got on the boat which seemed to do the trick as I felt fine the whole three days! We only had 23 people on our boat so it was less cramped than we imagined and we had quite reasonable sized beds which was great as I’d heard stories that on the cheap boats you just have to sleep on the wooden deck! On the second day on the boat we headed to the famous Whitehaven beach which was just as beautiful as we’d imagined but unfortunately the crew on our boat told us we didn’t need flip flops for the rocky painful walk there so we all ended up with sore feet! We also did lots of really good snorkeling, we saw a turtle and loads of new types of fish…we had a slight incident where I accidentally tried to drown Hannah due to the shock of seeing an absolutely hugeee fish, but she lived so no harm done!
After we got back from the sailing we ha a few hours to kill before the afterparty so we thought we'd head back to the room for a quite relaxing afternoon... when
we got to the room we were greeted by two Canadians who had other ideas so we ended up buying goon and having a line dancing lesson!!! We were quite merry due to the fact we didn't ahve any cups so had to drink the goon out of cereal bowls so this seeemed liek a perefectly normal thing to be doing! We had a great night at the after party but sadly we had to get another overnight bus last night to get to Cairns in time for our dive course tomorrow. We had to get picked up at 6am so an early goon-free night is definitely in store!!
We'll try to post some more pics of teh diving and our trip to the Cape Tribulation before we leave for Asia.
Love from Kate & Han xx
