On the morning of the 16th of March we met up with our group (11 of us) for a final briefing warning us not to go swimming in the sea as there are thousands of sharks surrounding the island and learnt how to "Be dingo safe".
For those who dont know Fraser Island it is the worlds largest sand island and its awesome!!! (If Olly was here he would be able to explain in greated detail that the sand comes from the mountains and has got stuck due to a rock called Indian Head and build up a sand island. Also if Fraser Island wasnt here then most of the Great Barrier Reef would have been swallowed by sand! But thats my attempt.)
When we first saw our van and started packing it up I honestly didnt think there was anyway we would all fit. There was three seats in the front and two benches down either side in the back. As soon as we pack we piled into our van. There was us four girlies, 2 girls from London (Anna and Lauren), 3 boys from Sweden (Robert, Bjorn and Filip), a girl from Germany (Simone) and a girl
from Chile (Claudia).
Luckily as we were all under 21 we weren't allowed to drive! So we had voted that the boys were going to do most of the driving although Filip has misplaced his license so he wasnt allowed to.
After a short ferry trip across to Fraser, we arrived at Central Station and went on a very brief walk down to the "Invisible Creek", it is actually visible but it does look see-through in lots of places due to the water being so pure.
We then spent most of the afternoon at Lake Birrabeen, where we went swimming and got to know each other a bit better.
We had been given a suggested itinery which showed us how we could do all the nice things on the island, and it also had suggested places to camp.
However due to us spending so long at the Lake it was a race against the tide to get all the way up the beach to our campsite.
Surprise surprise we didnt make it and ended up camping half way up the Eastern Beach. We put up the tents pretty fast and due to all of our previous practice
at putting up tents we stormed through and helped everyone else as well! (Ten Tors basecamp did come in handy)
We started to cook our BBQ far too late and I was cooking in the pitch black. We were all a bit freaked out due to everyone constantly warning us to "Be dingo safe" so after dinner we packed up most things and locked away our food as we had been told to do. I was knackered so after looking at the stars for a while I headed off to bed, shortly followed by everyone else.
We woke up really early and decided to try and make up for lost time by leaving earlier than planned. We packed up everything and started driving, it was so nice to have the wind in our hair again and not be bitten by flies!
We went for a quick dip in Eli Creek, and then headed up to the Maheno Wreck (a ship that was grounded on the island in 1935). After a quick photo we headed further North to Indian Head.
This is the furthest North that we were allowed to go, but we climbed to the top of Indian
Head and got some amazing views, I even saw a shark in the shallows!
After briefly stopping at a campsite on the way back down the beach, for lunch and a cold shower, we headed inland to Lake Garonwonga. We chilled there for a while and then headed on to our campsite, on our way we came across another Koalas Bus (the company we did it with) that had broken down. We helped them to move the van out of the road but as none of us had any signal there wasn't much else we could do. Some other people got held up behind us and they said that they would call for help when they got back to the main land.
We made it to our suggested campsite that night which was so much nice than the one before. Whilst cooking tea we had spotted a few dingoes in the woods, so I was quite scared. We played quite a few hilarious Swedish drinking games which obviously made us all a bit more relaxed about them. And most people fell asleep on the groundsheet, I was luckily in the tent, but Jenny woke up face to face
Me and Lauren dancing
This is a dance in the honour of Magnus Ugglah, the greatest song writer of all time.(As far as i know he is still alive dont panic!) with a dingo! After her encounter everyone headed back to their tents but we some how managed to leave our rubbish bag out and it was clear that the dingoes had been back later that night.
After a slightly better sleep, we got up and having lost our itinery we spent the whole day at Lake McKenzie. Which I would say hands down is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. We swam to the island which is probably the most exercise I've done in a long time.
The dingoes tried to join us for lunch, which wasn't very nice, so we headed back to the ferry pretty early.
So that was that, we had survived Fraser Island.
When we got back we had a night in Hervey Bay before our night bus to Airlie Beach, so we spent all our time their with Lauren and Anna. They were also put in our room which was nice and the boys were just down the corridor. After we checked out of our room we spent the whole day by the pool, before saying goodbye to all of our new friends, and some old ones who were
Lake McKenzie
Just as beautiful as I had imagined! just checking in.
