Our only winner of the day
What a fantastic 5 days we have had in Cloncurry with the "Beat the Heat Festival" being on for 3 days over the weekend. Friday kicked off at 5pm with The Street Party with one of the main back streets been cordoned off and it was $15 a head for entry and there was food and bars inside along with "The Curry Cookoff" judged by Miguel Maestre and then the public were able to do tastings and there was a crowd choice voting, there were some seriously good curries there, Sri Lankan, Indian, Thai etc.... was a really fun event! Early on there was lots of kids entertainment including Cocomelon (which I had never heard of but obviously all the kids there did as they knew the words to the songs and the people's names). Mine Cart Rally was a fun event. Music was fabulous with Creedence Clearwater Collective, just like it was Creedence and the singer sounded like John Fogarty, we just loved it and then later in the evening were the Wet Whistles.... could not believe the fabulous music we had til 11pm at night all for $15 but you know mining is big around here too and they

sponsor a lot of the country town events. Saturday was race day another fabulous day with a a bus provided to take people to the racecourse, all for a gold coin donation to RFDS seeing that Cloncurry was the birthplace of the RFDS. Sunday local markets and Monday to relax and visit the Chinamans Dam on the outskirts of town... what a beautiful lake and picnic area with super facilities for BBQs and kids playground. We also managed to fit in the two museums in town which were also very well done, a lot about Mary Kathleen and lots of memorabilia from there with quite a few of the houses from Mary Kathleen relocated to Cloncurry and the other museum was a gallery/RFDS museum. The lady at the tourist info centre was just lovely where we bought our tickets for museums and was born and bred in town, we congratulated her on their lovely town, green lawns on the roundabouts, clean and tidy and they didn't seem to have an aboriginal problem here, she said thank you and we hope we never do as we have always had good relations with the aboriginal people in town and most of them

Nice little list of yummy cocktails
respect the town....... it was like a breath of fresh air! That is until Monday we went down to the BWS to get some beer to find glaziers there and it was not serving but the main man there told us there had been three ram raids in town Sunday night... the boys from Mt Isa decided to come into town and try and help themselves to grog....BWS, a pub and the PUMA roadhouse and the cops caught them...thank god! The Oasis Caravan Park here is quite good but nothing fancy at all and it is for sale at $5million....big money! Now heading to Winton, stopped off at the Walkabout Creek Hotel of Crocodile Dundee fame.....an iconic pub in McKinlay....few vans pulled up...had a couple of cold beers (10am) had a look around and had a chat with one of the owners lovely lady and this pub is up for sale too at 1.4million dollars...very basic place too but hey not a lot of money...it has a few motel rooms as well as caravan park but no meals at present which is not great...we had intended to stay there but decided to head to Kynua to the Blue Heeler Pub

All dressed up big and small people
and spend the night. They all seem to be not without troubles, the Blue Heeler has great meals and cold beers but the owners Mum and Dad are up there getting things sorted after some managers were doing the wrong thing. The owner has a job driving trucks down in Longreach picking up roo meat etc. Down the road about 100klms from the Blue Heeler two nights at Pinnacle Rock Formations which was a beaut bush camp, we camped near the Fig Tree Waterhole, but all the water had dried up in the waterhole, had a couple of nice walks around the area and saw kangaroos in the distance and also there were huge flocks of kites circling the area during the day. Well we have been on the road for 36 weeks and haven't seen a drop of rain since we left Gawler in SA on 31st May and our days are still pretty hot in mid to high 30's.... I guess that will all change as we head south east. Now to Winton for the Outback Festival over the next week.
