Tropical
I fianlly got to walk through a tropical rainforest after all the subtropical ones I've been in. After our reunion Penny and I decided to get some grub we found a backpackers (PJ Murphy's) that did steak and mash for $5 if you bough a beer or wine. As good as this sounds it took 1hour 15min to actually get our food and we had to go and chase it up twice. But the food was good when it finally came.
Thursday was a relaxing day planning the rest of my trip which although unlike me was needed as I wanted to book flights to Ayres Rock and change my flights so I could spend some more time in New Zealand. But I have managed to get everything booked and changed so it was a vrey productive day. At night we met up with some Australian frined that Penny had met on a boat trip she did on Wednesday, I have a feeling the Australian girl Nat wasn't over keen on me but that was probably because when she asked what I thought of Australia I said I was a bit bored with it as it's all very samey (whoops I really should learn to think about what I'm saying before I say it) butt he night
No Hands
Sky surfing was alot of fun. was still good. Penny and I had to be up early so we left about 10pm to go to bed.
Friday I was so excited and soo soo tired, last night people had been shouting and singing in the hallway of our hostel (Global Palace) all night I had only managed to get 4 hours sleep and had to get up at 6.30am to go white water rafting. Almost unbeliveable neither Penny nor my alarms went off luckily Penny woke up, she kept talking to me to get me up but didn't realise I had ear lugs in because of the noise in the night, she finally shook me at 6.30am, we had to be down stairs for pick up at 6.40am. I have never moved so quick in the morning in my life. The white water rafting was on the Tully River 2hours out of Cairns It was brilliant. everyone else come out of the boat except me so in the end I jumped out of the boat, then climes a big rock and jumped off that. Our guide was a compete nut case, he was determined to get everyone out the boat and flip it, he also
Sushi
I finally got to try sushi but I think once was enough the sharks fin made me feel very funny. just kept making up stories like Koalas in tully lay eggs, but what made it so funny was he did it with a completely straight face. He would have been brilliant at poker.
Saturday was another early start as we were heading to Cape Tribulation, this was the place I had most been lookingforward to since I started the this trip and I was not disapointed at all. The first stop was a boat ride on the Daintree River, I SAW 2 CROCODILES!!! Its hard to explain how eciting it was to be so close to a dangerous wild animal but I was an amaising feeling. I also saw a green tree snake and nearly kissed a frog (see the pictures). The senery was also amaising the rainforest ont he river. I have been in so many sub-tropical rainforest that it was really exciting to finally be in a tropical rainforest. When we arrived in Cape Tribulation we checked into Ferntrees a hostel that used to be a five star resort, Penny and I had a room that was exactly the same as a hotel room even down to the free tea and coffee, there was a loft area
White Water Rafting
This is my team that I concered the Tully river with, this was the coolest day I might even do it again. where a couple slept but it was pretty mutch just me and Penny in a hotel. this was so nice after being in dorms for the last few months. the room was in a hut that was in the rainforest, it had a little front deck we could sit out on. The only down side to Ferntree was that there kitchen was closed so we had no where to cook food and all the restraunts were expensive, but we managed to survive on dip and sliced cheese and tomate andwiches.
Sunday we go up to go on a horse ride that promised to take us along the beach and throught he rainforest. This was something I had really been looking forward to, but when we got there I statrted to get nervous as the guide was telling us it's not a pony trek that we have to ride the horses, that we would trot and canter in places and that if we did not kick hard from the begining he would not be able to help us as the horse would know we were beginers and not take any notice of our comands. Steve the gurde started to work
Croc
That is a real crocodile behind my head, it felt scary to be so close to one in the wild but was a fabulous experiance out who was going to have which horse. I had been asigned Gonzo, I really wasn't sure what to make of this name and as everone was given there horse I stood trying to figure our which one was Gonzo, as it turned out Gonzo was a small horse (phew) that was gay, he had a boyfriend popy and spent most of the ride smelling popy's farts. I was really proud of myself as I managed to control Gonzo, he stopped and started as I kicked or pulled his reignes. Steve the guide thought he must have been having marital problems with Popy as he normally just followed, but the he saw me stop hima and said he was really supprised I had him under control as most people couldn't. The trak that we took lead straight out on to the beach and I was not disapointed my constant description of where the rainforest meets the ocean was spot on the veiw was simply beautiful.
The rest of the day was spent relaxing on the deck of our hut in the rainforest until night when we do our night guided rainforest walk. The walks are at night as most
Kissing my Prince Charming
I couldn't bring myself to kiss this frog and find out whether he was my prince, even with my eyes closed of the animals in the rainforest are nocternal. About an hour before we were leaving there was a really heavy shower but luckily it had stopped by the time we left. I was hoping to see lots of animals in the forest and I did but they were mostly insects and spiders urgh! Having said that I did see a bandicoot, forest mouse and *** dragon. The scariest part was when we had all been looking at a huntsman spider (very big spider) then he told us to turn our torches off. I had to stand two foot from a huntsman in the pitch black so that we could let our eye adjust and see the glowing fungus that wasn't even there. As soon as we were aloud to put the torch on everyone shone it on the huntsman to make sure it was still there.
Monday after checking out we went sky surfing this is where you are attached to a zip line and fly from tree to tree at the top of the rainforest, this was really really fun especially when we had to turn upside down and let go. In the afternoon we did a tour
Horsing Around
I'm on Gonzo and Penny is on Little Red. back to Cairns that stopped at the Mossman Gorge and Port Douglas unfortunatly our guide was not very good and he just dropped us off in aplace then said y we had 30 min to look but didn't tell us about it. Still the Mossman Gorge is pretty and I now know that there is nothing in port douglas so I'm not going to bother spending any time there.
Tuesday back in Cairns the weather still bad Penny and I wandered around the shops then I treated myself to a full body massage. This was brilliant for the first time in months I couldn't feel my back which means it wasn't hurting any more. I have decided to have at leaset one massage a month when I'm back (If anyone knows a good local massus back home let me know . As it's so cheap here I'm also going to have another treatment after I'm back from Ayres Rock next week.
Tuesday night we met up with Shaun and Noel (two guys we had been out with Thursday from Penny's boat trip) Marc a friend of mine that I keep seeing up the coast and some of Shaun
Where the Rainforest Meets The Reef
My whole trip I have been looking forward to Cape Tribulation, this picture is exactly as I imagined it so I wasn't disapointed. and Noels frend including Adam who is from Leigh-on-Sea and lives up the road from you Denise. As you can see from my singing picture it was a drunken night but a really really good laugh.
That brings me up to today I went for a walk with Penny and Shaun earlier around the harbour and epianard but thought I'd let then have some time for a while. Now I'm off to meet Lucy and Sue from the surf tour I did and later everyone is coming to our hostel for dinner and a cup of tea.
