5/5 My flight left Sydney at 7:30 this morning so I was at the hostel in cairns by 11am. I met up with Kennedy who has been working in cairns since I left cairns last month. She's also working for free accommodation so I waited for her to finish her cleaning and then we went to get sushi for lunch and catch up. We spent the afternoon at the lagoon which was so nice for me to be back in the hot weather again- this week is like going on holiday. Kennedy didn't have work this evening so we just chilled all day. I hadn't actually checked in when I arrived because it was too early and then I was using Kennedy's room. When I eventually went down to check in about 7pm I was told that I wasn't booked into that hostel! I'd booked my trip with Peterpans as usual and specifically asked for that hostel so I was with Kennedy but they'd booked me into one round the corner owned by the same company. Obviously I was annoyed about this so I rang Peterpans in Sydney and explained what they had done wrong. I was told they could swap
it to the right hostel from tomorrow nignt but I'd have to go to the other hostel tonight because it was too short notice to change. I stayed at Kennedy's for a while but then had to go and check in. I'd been up since 6am so once I'd walked to the other hostel I just stayed there and went to bed.
6/5 Today I got to go to the Great Barrier Reef again. I went to the harbour at 7:30 and got on the boat. I spent the day relaxing on the boat and snorkelling. It was very much like my Whitsundays trip only just for the day. I was expecting it to be even better because cairns is famous for the Great Barrier Reef and I thought the Whitsundays part of the reef wasn't as famous because it's not as spectacular. However I didn't think it was as gooe. Im not sure whether that's because the Whitsundays was so amazing so it was hard to live up to or it just wasn't as good a trip but it was still amazing. I saw lots of fish, turtles and even a shark. The food on the boat was
amazing just like last time and there was a section at the front of the boat to lie down and sunbathe which I love. I spoke to a few people but unlike last time it wasn't all backpackers and young people and I guess because it was only a day trip people weren't looking to make friends so much as last time where we all spent three days in each other's company the whole time. I got back to cairns about 5:30pm feeling pretty tired and Kennedy was in work so I just sat by the lagoon after dinner to use the wifi and chill out.
7/5 This morning was another early start because I got picked up at 7:30 to go to Cape Tribulation. We drove for about two hours picking some other people up and then driving towards Cape Tribulation along a pretty coastal road. We stopped at an information centre wbere we had a welcome ceremony from an aboriginal and then we went to a gorge for a quick swim. Our next stop was in the rainforest where we went for a half an hour walk through the trees. I was dropped off at my hostel
about 1pm so I checked in and got some lunch. The hostel room was a wooden hut in the rainforest and only a 3 minute walk to the beach. As I was walking down to the beach I bumped into one of the girls that was on my bus so we went together and ended up lying on the beach talking for a few hours until the sun started to go down. This evening my roommate and I went down to the beach where there was a bonfire. The Stars down there were amazing (almost as good as Fraser Island).
8/5 My roommate and I went for a walk along the beach after we checked out and found a view point where we could see the beach and the rainforest which is beautiful. Our bus picked us up at 1:30 and we headed back towards cairns. Our first stop was an ice cream shop where they sold a huge number of flavours all made from local products. We then pulled over at a view point to see the river going out into the ocean with the rainforest either side. The last part of the trip was a boat ride
along the river where we spotted some crocodiles. By the time I got back to cairns it was about 7:30 and Kennedy was in work so I got some food and sat by the lagoon to eat. Kennedy's acgually finished work by 8 because it was quiet so we bought a box of goon and sat by the lagoon drinking and talking all evening which was nice.
9/5 Along the esplanade this morning was a strip of markets so I went down and has a look while Kennedy was doing her accomodation work. We then spent the rest of the day in the pool and sunbathing because i wanted to spend my last two days on 'holiday' making the most of the sunshine. When we got back to the hostel there was a note on my door saying see reception so I went downstairs and was told I had to move rooms because mine had bed bugs- ew! They gave. D money to wash all my clothes before I could move rooms so while Kennedy was working I was busy doing laundry, showering and making dinner. They upgraded me to a 4 bed dorm on the water front so
u had a balcony (yay for bed bugs). Ken and I sat on my balcony drinking for a whole and then we went out for one last night out together until I see her at home in a year or so's time. We went to the pub next door called Rattle n Hum for one drink and then went to an Irish bar PJs where they had a live band on. Without intending to we both ended up getting really drunk and it turned out to be a really good night.
10/5 Again we spent the majority of the day sunbathing and swimming because it's enjoyable and free so why not. There was a live band playing on a little stage at the lagoon too which was nice. Live music, good weather and a swimming pool all in one place makes for a pretty good day. While kennedy was in work I went for a walk along the esplanade and found a spot by the beach to read my book for a while. Once Ken was back we went to a bar where they had a band playing. As we managed to spend all our money last night (we
had about one dollar left between us seriously!) we were just drinking water all night so it was a nice chilled evening. I ddint want anither crazy night anyway as I had to get up the next morning to check out and fly back to Sydney.
