Arrived on flight from Alice Springs to Cairns on Friday Evening with Jo and Gaz, checked into accomodation and headed straight to The Lagoon, a huge open air lido on The Esplanade for a quick swim before finding a place to eat. The Lagoon stays open until 10pm and was very busy as the weather in Cairns is very hot and humid. Then had a fantastic meal in The Raw Prawn .
Next day we were collected by mini bus and taken to a small airfield where a small plane is waiting to take us to our Rain Forest Retreat " Bloomfield'". Had an amazing flight over the Rain Forest saw some fantastic scenery, then landed on a grass/mud airstrip at the tiniest airport we have ever seen called Mount Louis Airport. There was a customs and Immigration sign saying "Not Here Mate". We were then taken by minibus to the jetty where a small boat was waiting to take us to Bloomfield. This resort is not accessible by road!
When we arrived we were greeted by the staff and made very welcome with a complimentary beer and then shown around. The bar area overlooked the pool with the
forest all around and the sea just a short stroll down some steps. We were all shown our rooms which lived up to our expectations, very spacious with fantastic views of the sea. We unpacked quickly and went to the pool for a dip before lunch. We had heard the food was good and it certainly was, and there was plenty of it. The bar was an honesty bar any time day or night and you just ticked off on your sheet when you had a drink. After lunch Bill and Gaz went on a Rain Forest walk but I relaxed with Jo by the pool. things couldnt be much better! 😉 Later the same afternoon Bill and Gaz tried their hands at fishing off the jetty. Wasnt very successful!!
The day was going very quickly, down to bar for drinks before another huge meal. It was BBQ night
Buffet. Moreton Bay Bugs, Oysters Kilpatrick, Tiger Prawns, Chirizo sausage, chicken, steaks, fish plus all the trimmings. Bill managed to eat most of the Oysters which were small but cooked in soy sauce and topped with bacon cubes. The Chef did a fantastic job. Went to bed that night very
full and tired, to the sound of croaking tree frogs which sound like a mechanical pump!!
Next day the four of us decided to take the boat out on a Fishing and Snorkelling trip on the reef. We were taken by two Aussies called Ryan and Shane. Shane looked and spoke just like Crocodile Dundee!!
Started off with a bit of line fishing which was not very successful, then we stopped to get off boat to snorkel. We were very deep and Sue struggled a bit, but we saw lots of different fish and Shane went down to spear a Lobster. Back to boat to have lunch and do some more fishing. This time it was with hand reels and bait. This was more successful, one of the guys caught a Coral Trout and some smaller fish which had to go back in the water. It was then time for more snorkelling but Sue decided to stay on boat and fish, and caught a Red Mouthed Emperor, it wasnt big enough to take back but Ryan filleted it and it was used for bait. When Bill, Jo and Gaz came back they fished again and caught more Coral Trout
each, Bill caught one that was huge!! The catch was laid out on the deck for us to photograph, we ended up with four Coral Trout and two Lobsters. They were taken back to Bloomfield for the chef to cook the next day for our dinner.
Monday we decided to have a lazy day by the pool and booked up for massages, very good. Even more relaxed by end of day. What a life, sunbathing, sleeping, eating fantastic food and having a massage before dinner. Bill and Gaz were a bit more active and did a spot more fishing from the jetty and caught a small fish, not sure what and Bill caught a big red fish which snapped the line and got away.
Dinner was the trout and lobster we had caught the previous day, very tasty.
Tuesday, Jo and Gazs' last day with us, we decided to take the Riverboat Cruise after lunch. Shane was our guide and he took us through Mangrove Swamps and we saw lots of different birds and two crocodiles, what an amazing sight. One was and adult and one a baby croc. We all had a great afternoon. Dinner that night
A Big Lizard
1 metre long we arranged to eat in one of the Gazebos for Jo and Gazs last night. It was an excellent meal as usual.
Next morning we waved goodbye to Jo and Gaz as they went back to Cairns to carry on with their holiday alone. Bill and i decided to try our hand at fishing again and went out on a boat with another couple. Wasnt a very successful afternoon with no fish to take back, but Sue caught a small Perch and Bill caught something but they had to go back in the water.
Our last night in Bloomfield, so we celebrated with a bottle of champagne before dinner. Early start next day to get flight back to Cairns, We had a fantastic time at Bloomfield and hope to return there one day.
