Me Scuba Diving
Me on the Great Barrier Reef on a Reef imaginatively called Swimming Pool Number 2!!! So my second day in Cairns began with a trip up north to Daintree and Cape Tribulation, which was really really pretty. We also had a stop off at a rainforest habitat, got to feed some Kangaroo's, Wallabies and Wallaroos (never ever heard of these before- a cross between a wallaby and a kangaroo). We then had lunch on Cape Tribulation, but no swimming unfortunately because of the crocodiles and stingers :-(. We then took a cruise down the Daintree River to see some nesting crocodiles in the wild which pretty awesome. On the way back though the road was so windy I spent 15 minutes throwing up when I got back to the hostel!!!. It was a really fun day anyway.
The next day I had a free day and spent it by the Lagoon here in Cairns. Basically there is no beach as it is just mud flats and also because of the crocodiles and the box jelly fish at this time of year you wouldn't be able to onto the beach anyway. So, there is a manmade lagoon where you can sunbathe and swim in. It's really nice. There isn't much to do here as it is
Aussie Signs
How funny is this sign indicating what can happen if you speed and hit the nearly extinct Cassowary bird. Typical Australia, serious message delivered with humour!! basically a sleepy little town (What the Aussies call a city) that is just full of tour desks, dive shops, clothes, souveneir, didgeredoo shops, restaurants, hotels and bars. So, there aren't that many attractions. i was hanging out with a German girl staying in my dorm which was really cool and that night we along with an American girl went out in the hostel bar and had a pretty good night. However, it was fairly low key on my part as the following day I was heading to the Great barrier Reef to go diving. i had booked a day trip to the outer reef whcih included lunch and 2 dives. However, first of all the water was a bit choppy so I was sick- really really embarrasing!!! Also, I've had a cold that I haven't been able to shift for a couple of weeks, and you shouldn't really dive as it can damage your ears really badly, but I thought I'd see how things went. My first dive though I couldn't clear my ears properly and they started to hurt really badly so i surfaced and went snorkelling instead. After the first dive everyone had lunch whilst I was
Cape Tribulation
Beautiful untouched beaches here North of Cairns. no swimming though because of the stingers and the crocodiles- both can kill you- think I'll just admire the view! sick (again!!!) but the second dive I was able to do and it was amazing!! I really loved it and it was such a perfect day for it, really good visibility.
The next day I took a trip to a little town called Karunda. To get there it started on a scenic railway, but seat wasn't great so it wasn't all together that scenic for me!! Then I went to a butterfly sanctuary, and then caught a cable car down to an aboriginal park where I learnt to throw a spear and a boomerang. They also put on a dance performance and a performance on their creation belief. It was really cool with lots of lights and holographics! That evening I went for a meal with 2 guys who had moved intot he room as the 2 girls had left already. We were planning on getting and cooking some Emu, Crocodile and kangaroo and cooking it, but after our Mexican we were pretty full so we came back, and i went to bed for an early start the following day.
The next day (yesterday) I went to visit some waterfalls and some mountains- i was sick again though
Boomerang Throwing
They say a boomerang that doesn't come back is just a stick!!! I think I was throwing a stick, or it may have been my technique....mmmm you decide!! as we went on a road which is famous for it's 220 bends- it was not a pleasant experience. When i got back though the boys had gone to find some meat but everything was closed, so they cooked us all some pizza. Three girls had moved into the dorm, and the 6 of us headed out to the famous club here in Cairns called the Woolshed. It's famous because apparently it's only 1 of 3 clubs in Oz that you are allowed to dance on the tables (think of the Footage (Flea) and Firkin back in the day Xaverian people!!!!!). It was a good night but when we got back i made a complete idiot of myself by walking into the glass doors of the patio!!!! That was topped off though by Daryl one of the guys tryng to pur himself a glass of wine with the top still on- as soon as he lifted the bottle I knew what he was going to do and burst out laughing, but he was sat there with a look of confusion on his face for about 5 minutes and did not get why I was laughing!!!
