Arrived in Cairns on the 3rd November - yes i know i am behind again but i'm busy ain't i?!!?
Checked into quaint hotel near the town which was by far the nicest we had stayed in so far - obviously we had to lower the tone!
We discovered we were sharing a room with a guy called Steve who worked on the QM2 as a cabaret host, needless to say he was a bubbly gay sort who we had a good old sing-a-long with to the musical stylings of westlife - yet again!
The following day we visited "the lagoon" which sounds like a very exotic kind of place but was infact a swimming pool by the sea front - no beach you see!
That evening we met up with the Irish girls that we'd met in Perth who had hired a camper van to come down the east coast. We met at the local Irish bar (ironically) for a few drinks and needless to say it ended up a little messy. My memory recalls jumping around on the dance floor to the stereophonics with Maureen (Maureen is one of the crazy Irish birds) and downing several shots of
black sambuca - err evil! I finally decided i couldn't hack it anymore, i decided this when i could no longer stand without the aid of the bar. So off i ungracefully stumbled back to the hostel leaving the girls to it. When i arrived back at the hostel i suddenly became aware of how starving i was - no cyprus kebab house out here oh no. I decided to pay a visit to the cafe that was in the reception of our hostel, unfortunatley (unfotunate for them) the cafe was unmanned so i decided i would "borrow" a sauage roll (ok let's call a spade a spade , i stole it)! I awoke in the morning with a stinking headache, crisps thrown casually across the floor, pastry stuck to my face and hair and half a sausage roll wedged between mine and Kirsty's bunk bed - oh the shame! The girls were no better - all i'll say is there was an incident involving a trolley and the police and then my lips are sealed. Binge drinking yobs!
We left Cairns the following evening on the greyhound headed for Airlie beach. The 12 hour coach ride was torture that
they insist you pay for! I slept with my legs resting straight up against the window ( a flattering image of my arse for passing vehicles) and my head hanging in the aisle dribbling on the floor - class!
Arrived in Airlie beach at 10 am and then it was off to the hostel for a power nap. Later that afternoon we booked our trip to the Whitsundays which is a group of islands east if the mainland at the edge of the great barrier reef.
Whitsundays Day 1 -
We departed Airlie beach , which ironically doesn't have a beach and boarded our ferry and off we went to daydream Island , we stopped here only briefly to drop the posh people off who were actually holidaying here. We continued on to Hamilton Island which is kinda like Sheppey - ummm not! They drive nothing but golf buggies! We hired ourselves a golf buggy and set about exploring the island for a couple of hours - gorgeous views and beaches and lots of golf buggy fun!
After Hamilton Island we continued on to Whitehaven beach which is a postcard picture beach , the only thing that could of
ruined the postcard image was the fact that we had to all wear stinger suits as it's stinger season! Cannot express how amusing it was to witnesss 60 people running towards the ocean in all in one navy blue stinger suits complete with hoods and mittens!
We left Whitehaven and proceeded on to Long Island which was to be our accomodation for the night. We were plesantly surprised to find a "real" hotel with a pool bar , a beauty salon and clean bedding - heaven!
We spent that night and the following day soaking up the sun and cocktails at Long Island before returning to Airlie beach.
The following day Kirsty and i decided that the Islands were so beauitiful that we would take a helicopter ride over them. The views were fantastic and i was only scared because i had an overwhleming urge to hurl myslef out of the open door - bloody sky dive has alot to answer for!
Our final day in Airlie Kirsty paid a visit to the great barrier reef to scuba dive - crazy bitch, i told her about the sharks as well but she insisted! I stayed in the safety of
the swimming pool. Packed Kirsty off with an underwater camera to capture the experience so it's practically like i was there!
We left Airlie beach the following day headed to Hervey bay , another 13 hour coach journey - GREAT ........................................................... To be continued
