My apologies for slacking off on keeping this up to date. Sometimes it's hard to find a connection and sometimes it's tough to find the time.
Anyway, here's an update:
Lennox Head - was INCREDIBLE! It is a fairly small town, but has an amazing beach and view of the ocean. When you cross the street from said beach, you come to a lake. The lake is surrounded by tea trees and the water is actually a reddish colour. It was amazing! The water felt so nice on your skin.
Byron Bay - we just took a day trip (shuttled in by our hostel) to Byron Bay. The timing is really bad for going to some of these locations because right now is "schoolies". What this is, is basically spring break in Australia. All of the grade 12's from all over the country come down to a few select cities, mainly major beach towns and take over. It's party central for a 3 week span. Needless to say, we opted for a day trip only to avoid the madness. Byron Bay had tons of character. Lots of unique shops, beautiful beaches, an old lighthouse, and is the most
eastern point of Australia.
Coolangatta - I have to be honest, Coolangatta was not my favourite place. The beaches were gorgeous, but they all are, but the town did nothing for me. It's possible that I was also just getting tired of seeing beaches that basically all look the same, or shops that all sell the same things. I don't know...
Brisbane - I LOVE BRISBANE!!! This city is amazing. Tons of character, very artsy, beautiful river valley. VERY HOT! The humidity here is unreal. Today is supposed to be 30, but it will likely feel more like 35. There is a man-made lagoon & beach in the centre of the city. It's really something. It looks like it is the oceanside, but there are huge buildings all around. It's all free though, and there are families, teenagers and travelers there all of the time. There are markets on all the time, live music everywhere, lots of theatre, pubs and clubs on every street corner, botanic gardens, a giant ferris wheel, boat cruises, bascially anything you want, you can find it here. On Sundays, they have free stand up comedy at a place called the Powerhouse. It's a
very interesting building and a great idea. We went last night, the comedians weren't funny, but it was something to do for free and had potential to be good. Basically, I have really, really enjoyed Brisbane, I think it was a welcome change from beach towns that all seem the same after awhile. I have sent out a bunch of resumes here, and have purchases an Australian cell phone, so if something good comes from any of it, I'll be back here soon enough.
Today, I am heading to Maroochydore. I don't know much about it, but I DO know it's another beachtown. Truthfully, after the heat and humidity here, I am looking forward to being able to jump in the ocean and go for a swim whenever I feel like it again. I miss the beach and ocean already. Since I am heading north, the humidity will get worse and worse - heading to the land of rainforests, and you can't swim in the ocean once you get a bit further north either. It's the land of box jellyfish and stingers as well. It should be beautiful, but HOT won't even begin to describe it I don't think.
Anyway, I think that brings us up to date. Off to Maroochydore. I will keep looking for jobs along the way, but want to keep moving so I don't spend too long waiting in one spot, spending money and missing out on the next thing. I will send an update as soon as possible.
Love,
Heather
