Well we arrived at the Bungle Bungles Caravan Park on Monday 15th. The sky was overcast and looked a bit grim. After booking in we enquired about a flight over the ranges thinking maybe Thursday would be a good day. The girl was a very good sales woman and convinced us to go that afternoon. Well I can tell you, I (Lyn) was shitting my pants as I had a yukky flight over the Flinders in this type of weather. Anyway at 3pm we took off into the sky with a pilot who looked about 10 years old!!! David only has slight bruises to his leg from my fingernails digging in. The scenery is awesome and our pictures don't do it justice.
The next day saw us leave the van and go tenting in the national park. It takes about 1 1/2 hours to get there. After stopping at the Ranger Station and getting a park pass (S.A. take note....1 pass covers all national parks in W.A.) we went straight to Echidna Chasm which is a walk along a dry creek bed full of stones. You really must stop watching your feet to look up and see the scenery. I
chickened out with the ladders at the end but David went on and got the last pics for us.
After sleeping in a queen bed and then sleeping on the ground (and no he wouldn't bring the therma rest mattress) it was a bit of a shock. We were eating tea at 4.30 to avoid the bugs with our lights as it is dark here at 5.15pm, then bed at 7.30!! But we were up at 5.30 am so we feel justified in our early nights.
The following day we took a walk around the domes, cathedral gorge and piccaninny creek lookout.
That was certainly worth the 2 1/2 hours it took. Cathedral Gorge is massive and spectacular when you finally get there (and yes I did climb the ladder for that one).
We had a couple of Kookaburras come visit every day and the lady volunteering at the park has collected numerous cane toads, so they are here but we didn't see any. (Doesn't surprise me as we spent 2 weeks in Cairns and I saw 1 cane toad).
I did make a comment to David about the lack of ground animals out here so on Thursday which was pack up day and head
back to the van for some creature comforts Yipee, while dismantling the tent I found some ground critters...a large spider and a centipede. Yuk. I
might keep my mouth shut next time.
We have checked the weather and it is supposed to be getting worse, so far we have been lucky and missed most of it. This is our last night here then we are off to Halls Creek, then 2 nights in Fitzroy Crossing (laundry time). After that it depends on the weather if we can get into Widjana Gorge.
Hope you enjoy this and to all those who whinged that we are getting tooooooo much sun...the rains are coming.
