Kings Canyon
Our tour group on a ledge over the edge of the canyon Sleeping under the stars was very pleasant, but of course we more-or-less woke up when the sun came up (5.00am).
King's Canyon is often referred to as Australia's Grand Canyon. After visiting the American version, I would not quite agree with that statement, but it was spectacular none-the-less. Actually the Blue Mountains in New South Wales were also referred to as Australia's Grand Canyon, so I don't know if the relevant tourist boards managed to resolve that one.
To get there, we first walked through an area known as the Lost City, which consists of a large area of strange moon-like rock, outcrops and then a gorge full of Palm Trees known as the Garden of Eden. In the canyon itself there was a large water hole in which we went for a much-needed swim. We were walking for most of what turned out to be a very long and tiring, but worthwhile, day.
At one point our guide sat us all down for a photograph. It was only afterwards, as we walked a long the rim of the canyon, that we realised that he had sat us on a thin outcrop of rock that was sticking out

The lake at the base of the canyon over the canyon. It made a great picture and it was probably best that we didn't know at the time.
Everyone planned to meet up again for a pizza that evening, but I was booked on the bus north to Darwin and I caught it in the nick of time, although I was toying with the idea of thinking "what the hell" and meeting up with everyone else for the evening.
