BusBusBus

A very familiar sight.
Friday was our last day in Alice Springs, but it wasn’t without a bit of excitement. In fact, Hillary had lost her jacket from the night before! We spent a good chunk of the day walking back and forth between our own hostel, and the hostel where we met up with our tour mates the previous night. Eventually on the third try, Hillary was successful and finally found it! It was a huge relief for the both of us since our matching jackets were Christmas gifts before leaving on our trip, and they’re the only coats we brought with us. Lol

That evening we boarded the bus to head to Darwin. It was a long bus ride, just under 24 hours! We made plenty of stops, but it still wears on you regardless. We left around 7pm on Friday the 24th, and around 6pm on Saturday the 25th we arrived in Darwin, the half way point of our trip around Australia!

First thing we did was find the local YHA hostel, and unload our stuff. Then we headed out for pizza, as a treat to ourselves after eating nothing but candy and snacks throughout the previous 24 hours. Expensive,

but still good. Lastly we headed off for bed. It may have been only 9pm, but that didn’t seem to bother us.

Sunday, we explored the town a bit. In contrast to the rest of the Northern Territory, Darwin’s definitely a big city. Its population is about 120,000. The city is actually quite modern too, mostly because a vast majority of the city was rebuilt after Cyclone Tracy. Darwin is also featured in the movie Australia (with Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman), and needed to be rebuilt after being bombed by Japan during WWII. One of the things we noticed right away was the weather. Darwin has a wet season (during the summer months) and a dry season (during the winter months). We planned our trip so that we’d be here during the dry season, and thank goodness for that. It was 30 degrees Celsius, but as we were just entering the dry season, it wasn’t too humid. I don’t know how people could stand this kind of heat everyday. Lol

We ended up spending a good chunk of the day at the Northern Territory Reference Library. A very nice, air-conditioned library with internet! Who needs McDonalds when

the library’s got free WiFi. Lol Of course, plenty of backpackers had the same idea, so the library was pretty busy. After that, we made plans to start looking for jobs, and called it a night.
