Eleanor and I were invited to a wedding in Noosa, George, our next door neighbour's son, was getting married to Bess. We decided to take a week off and take a slow trip North stopping at a few coastal resorts along the way. I bought a new surfboard for the trip, a 6' 6" "rocket fish" so the trip was also a chance to try it out.
Day1. It was an early start, we were away by 6am and drove for about five and a half hours to South West Rocks, a small seaside resort. It's a very pretty place with a historic jail at nearby Trial Bay. After checking into a one bedroom apartment ($80) we took a walk. There was a bit of a wave close to where we were staying so I got into my wettie and christened the fish. Not a bad little wave to try out the new board and I had it to myself. After my surf we drove to the jail and had a look around, we also took a walk up to a German monument. The sign indicated that it was a 40 minute walk, that must of been there and back because
we did it comfortably in about 15 minutes each way. That night we had a nice Thai dinner, we got the $8.50 special each and washed it down with a nice bottle of Savingnon blanc. We then took a walk to the Country Club to play bingo, even though there were only about 20 people we didn't have a win. Very unlucky considering Eleanor is somewhat of a Bingo expert. A lady at the next table overheard us asking about the courtesy bus that takes patrons home, it stopped running before the bingo finished though. Very kindly she offered to drive us home.
Day 2. We woke early, I checked out the surf and decided to go out for a paddle, it was a bit smaller than the day before but still rideable. I actually went out at another break, a little spot called Horseshoe Bay, it was a short walk from the spot I surfed the day before. After my surf we checked-out of the apartment and had a pie and coffee at the local bakery. Eleanor then had a look in a dress shop and found a couple of pieces that she liked. We then continued onto Byron
Bay, about a four and a half hour drive. I'd booked a room in a Bed and Breakfast ($95) near to where my Aunty Dot lives, we checked in before visiting her. Aunty Dot is 85 (I think) and still going strong, my cousin Joanne, her daughter Leah and her daughter Sophia were also there - four generations. Eleanor and I were sitting on the lounge when little Sophia came home, suddenly I heard something rocket past my head, the little girl had kicked off her shoe and it flew like a bullet right between Eleanor and I. I think she may make a good striker in soccer one day. After a cup of tea and a chat we arranged to meet at the Services Club for dinner, as we had a spare hour or so we decided to drive up to the Lighthouse which is the most easterly point in Australia. We then went to the club and had a very nice T-bone steak, only $15 and a perfect medium rare.
Day 3. After breakfast at the B&B we checked-out and had a look at the surf at "The Pass", a well known surfing spot. Unfortunately it was onshore
and sloppy so we hit the road, our next stop was Caloundra and I was able to get a wave at Kings Beach after lunch. We then checked-in to the Rydges Resort ($89) before going to Peter and Janet's place for dinner. Eleanor and I met at Peter and Janet's wedding so we've known them for a long time. They moved to Caloundra about 5 years ago and bought a very nice house on one of the canals. Peter cooked some delicious curries for dinner and we watched the footy on TV after.
Day 4. We left Caloundra and took the short drive to Noosa for George and Bess's wedding. First stop was the markets at Eumundi, I bought a few things and we had a Paella for lunch, we then drove to the Australis Resort where we were staying ($120), this was also the venue for the reception. The ceremony was held on the beach, it was agreat day and the bride and brides maids all looked great, George also scrubbed up well in a bone suit (marvellous) and designer thongs. We actually had a bit of trouble finding the exact location as it's quite a long stretch of
beach and park, fortunatley we arrived on time. The reception went well, everyone enjoyed themselves with plenty to eat and drink.
Day 5. Woke up feeling slightly seedy after the night before. We had some wedding cake for breakfast then drove to Noosa National Park, we were able to get a good parking spot near the start of the trail to Tea Tree Bay. The walk around to Tea Tree took about 15 minutes, I took my board and was able to get a small wave. I've surfed Tea Tree before, when I was a teenager my Dad took my brother Phil and I to Noosa and we had some great waves there, unfortunately today it wasn't very good - barely rideable infact, however the weather was perfect. After Tea Tree we drove back to Caloundra, we'd booked another night at Rydges, and watched the footy on TV. We decided to get a takeway for dinner (noodles and chilli chicken) and had an early night.
Day 6. Woke early again and headed down to Kings beach to check the surf, it was only very small but I still went out a got some small waves. Kings Beach has a well
shaped wave and I'm sure it would be great on a good day. I then went back to Rydges, had a shower and we started the eight hour drive to Crescent Head, another coastal resort that's close to South West Rocks. When we got there we checked out a few places and decided to stay in a cabin at the Caravan Park on the beach ($100). It was a great spot and vey comfortable. That night we had pizza at a restaurant that's a part of the local hotel, one of the best pizza's I've had for a long time.
Day 7. Checked out the surf before our drive home. Unfortunately it was blowing a gale from South East pretty much wrecking the waves. I didn't bother going out as I didn't want to get blown back up to Noosa. We then drove home arriving at about 3pm, the house was in reasonable condition considering Michael and Justine had been home by themselves. All in all it was a great week and I look forward to heading North again.
