South (East) Coast Adventure Part 3
Dangling 30m high in a waterfall is great fun - especially if you look like a Legoman
We headed to the Blue Mountains for a bit of fun and that was definitely what we got. We treated ourselves to a day of canyoning and had a fantastic time and saw many superb views too. The morning was spent developing our abseiling skills on some 5m, 10m and 30m rockfaces overlooking the "Three Sisters". Adrenaline had kicked in by the 30m abseil and went into overload by the afternoon. We donned wetsuits, harnesses and helmets (Pete looked just like a Legoman). After jumping our way into waterholes along a stunning gorge we reached the highlight of the day - a 30m abseil through a waterfall. The flowing water and slippery rocks helped make the abseil even more of a challenge. Ang was pretty scared at the top, Pete calm as ever. Once you started going down the buzz was fantastic and reaching the pool at the bottom was a great feeling. We were both so pleased we had chosen to come canyoning, something we would love to do again. Fortunately, unlike the gorge
walking on Pete's stag do, we have not contracted dysentry from the river water.
Sydney - King's Cross
We were really looking forward to a comfy bed for a good night's sleep in Sydney - we have slept in the tent for 31 nights in Oz, the latter few being during mad thunderstorms (10,000 lightening hits an hour). Little did we realise that the neighbourhood we had booked into was the noisy King's Cross with hundreds of fellow backpackers, tens of hookers and a few pimps and drug dealers. Even Pete was kept awake at night - the street below our window did keep us amused.
Sydney Shopping
For the first time ever it was Pete dragging Ang shopping. They were off to buy a large, painted, hollow, wooden stick. Ang wasn't too keen on spending much money on the didjeridoo until she had a go and agreed to be signed up to the lesson the next morning. We bought our didj and returned the next day for an hour of raspberry blowing and cringing at some of the noises we made. It may take a bit of practice - Pete has vowed that
it won't just collect dust in the corner of the lounge, looks like we better hunt for a detached house on our return.
Sydney Sightseeing
A 26km walk around Sydney Harbour sounded a great plan so, armed with a vague newspaper article about the route, off we trundled. After 2 hours and frequent photo stops we had made it across the Harbour Bridge (about 1km) so realised we had better up the pace. We wound our way round the coves and bays seeing how the other half live - there were some lovely homes with beautiful views, a few swimming pools and even a rooftop tennis court. Despite walking for 7 hours we had only made it half way, mainly due to several minor diversions from the unclear route. Fortunately we found a ferry to take us and our weiry feet back to Circular Quay.
This weekend we met up with 2 Brum mates - James and Neil - who are both living in Oz. On the Friday we decided to have a quiet night, crawling into bed at 2am. Nursing slight hangovers on the Saturday we went up the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon to lookout
Pancake Day...
Accidently missed pancake day - but made up with a feast two weeks later. over the city and the opera house and then caught the Manly ferry for a night in this coastal suburb. On recommendation from Nick and Emma we headed to "Rib and Rump" and had a fantastic meal. Pete ordered the kilogram rack of ribs and, not to be outdone, Ang ordered the signature Rib and Rump meal which was actually the biggest meal out of the four of us. The food arrived, not a veg in sight. Both plates were cleared without spilling so much as a drop on their bibs. Thanks Nick and Emma.
Bondi
We had to head to the beach one last time before leaving Oz and that beach just had to be Bondi. Great beach, packed with people, the boys especially enjoyed the views. This is Neil's new home - we're sure he'll have a fab time.
It's Goodbye to Bruce and Sheila
We're off to New Zealand tomorrow and can't believe how quickly our 6 weeks here has passed. There are so many other places we could have seen here - perhaps we'll just have to come back one day. Ang's dad is gatecrashing the honeymoon tomorrow - in
You know we belong together...
