This morning after breakfast we decided to head south on the Port Macquarie Coastal Walk to achieve our 30 minutes exercise goal while it was still early. The walk goes all the way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, but we didn’t have any ambition to walk quite that far this morning! We stopped off at the Flagstaff Lookout and then walked for about another 10 minutes before turning around to walk back to the apartment to get ready for our 12 noon whale watching tour.
Yes, at the risk of seeming obsessed with whale watching we booked another tour for today … still hoping that we might see a whale breach?? On Monday we were told that the whales are more likely to breach if it is a bit choppy because it becomes difficult for them to clear their blowholes when the waves are larger. Another friend commented on Face Book that she saw some whale acrobatics on a late morning trip out of Newcastle. She said it was like they were still asleep until about 10.30am and then it was all action. Last night, when we were checking in, we were told that the whales are much more active going
south than they are going north because the new mums are teaching their calves all the moves!! Anyhow, all of that advice became irrelevant because our tour was cancelled due to high winds. Very disappointed. But, maybe we will come back one day for the southern migration??
At lunchtime we ambled across the road to the Salty Crew Kiosk where they were experiencing a cheese shortage. What?! Bernie decided to have his ham and cheese toasted sandwich with feta cheese. I decided to abandon the whole toastie idea – you can’t have a toasted sandwich without lovely melted cheese oozing from it – and chose a falafel wrap instead.
Disappointed from the cancellation of our whale watching tour AND no cheese for lunch, we walked into town and consoled ourselves with ice-creams! Walking in via the breakwater we came upon the Little Shack displaying a sign advertising paella Thursday so that was dinner decided! The only problem was that we needed to cancel the booking we made last night for Bill’s Fishhouse & Bar, but that turned out to be easy to do via their website.
Back at the apartment I spent the rest of the afternoon
reading while Bernie walked back into town to do some banking that had proved problematic online.
With the sun setting we walked back to the Little Shack for our paella. We arrived right on sunset and it wasn’t very spectacular at all. However, after we had taken our seats inside, the sunset turned much more colourful. We ordered some corn chips with guacamole to eat while the paella finished cooking. Even though the Little Shack is close to being al fresco dining its heaters were great! I was warmer than I have been a couple of times at proper indoor restaurants!!
Having dinner so early we were back in our apartment in plenty of time for Bernie to tune into the football. Unfortunately it was a disappointing result.
