Here are just some more bits & bobs of what we got up to during our time in Sydney.
I don't know if it made the news back home but here it was big news, David Beckham came to Sydney on a promotional things & played against Sydney. He was in Myer launching his new fragrance, you can just about make him in the photo but its fair to say a few thousand turned up to see him & we thought why not not like we have got lots on at the moment! So here's the proof Flic!
We went originally to the Blue Mountains for four days & three nights, however after three days of rain, wind & mist we hadn't seen a single thing, but had improved our pool skills we stayed an extra night & these are the pictures of what we were rewarded with. You can do day trips from the city here, but we thought we would make the most of it & enjoy a few days. It takes 2 hours to get here from the city with Katoomba being the 21st stop. Its amazing you can go from sun & blue skies to
Blue Mountains in the rain
Proving it does rain out here (occasionaly) this in a matter of a few kms. Katoomba is one of the main tourist towns & has a very nice YHA. We got there & went for a walk to Echo point in the hope we may see something. How wrong were we! It is slightly surreal because you can't see much past the end of your nose but you can hear all the sounds coming from the valley below. We walked down to the view point bridge accross to the 3 sisters & for a few minutes got a glimpse of what we were missing as we seemed to get below the line of the mist. It was spectacular but didn't last long before we were surrounded again. We convinced ourselves it would be fine in the morning.
But it wasn't, worse if anything than before. So we decided we would hire some bikes & go for an explore rather than sit inside. Well it was only after the guy showed us how to use a bike (apparently different than back home) & we got out on the road that we realised it probably wasn't the most sensible idea. The mist was worse than ever, visibility was
less than 50metres. But we had paid our money so off we went. For the whole four hours we saw 2 people. We cycled to Narrow Neck Plateau which probably had spectacular views but we didn't see any. We went down some very steep hills & pushed the bikes back up these! When we got back to the shop the owner guy was pleased to see us only because we had made it back with the bikes as he proudly said we were completely mad for hiring bikes today!
The next day the weather was still awful, we went & did a board walk which was good as the trees sheltered us from the rain. We went down to the valley on an old coal railway which is 46 degrees angle, the seats are like buckets so you can't fall out. We got the cable car back up, as we waited it looked as though it was going to be clear long enough to see something, but this didn't last. Rain & mist quickly came in & we didn't see a thing, although the guide reassured us the weather had been good for the past 5 weeks, just what
you want to hear.
The weather was suppose to be good on Friday so we decided to extend our stay in the hope that we would at least see something. On the Thursday afternoon we went for a walk, the morning we had also done the same & got caught in driving rain & wind. But in the difference of 5 hours the weather cleared up & the mist was starting to lift & we finally got to see the Blue Mountains & what we saw was amazing. It totally takes your breath away. We just sat & watched in amazement as the sunset. At night they light up the three sisters which we were told was worth seeing. We were the only ones who stayed to see this but it was totally worth it, the pictures did not do justice to the view.
We got up very early to get to Echo Point before the coaches turned up, we were rewarded with this beautiful sight of the mist going through the valley. It slowly lifted, we then set off down the one thousand steps to the valley floor to walk through the bush before taking the cable
car back to the top. We cheated rather than walk up the steps! We went on the skywalk a cable car which goes from side to side over the valley with a glass floor. The Blue Mountains were quite & experience, nothing like anything either of us had seen before. The Blue Mountains are well worth a trip for anyone in the Sydney area.
After we got back from our tour to Byron Bay we went & stayed at Collaroy one of the Northern beaches, it is very different to the likes of Cogee, Bondi or Manly but well worth the visit. We visited Palm Beach home to the Summer Bay (Louisa hope you recognise the photo as your the only one I know who watches it!). The surf is much bigger up here than the South beaches so we didn't brave to go in although James was keen to show off his new swimming skills!
