Day 3 of Silver Salmon Fishing:
First a recap of last night’s fishing. Grandpa called it a night after dinner and Jim, Dad and I went out with Jason for some night fishing. We were able to find a new hole close to the mouth of the river. The fish were coming from the ocean in waves. I couldn’t get a picture that would do it justice, but it was amazing. There were so many swimming up that is looked like the beginning of a triathlon when all the swimmers are splashing around together. We would just wait a minute and that school of salmon would swim right through our fishing channel and you could pick a few off. The game and fish patrol flew over the river yesterday afternoon and they said there was 750 silvers at the mouth of the river when they flew over. So that was just a snapshot of what happens the entire day (going to be tough to fish anywhere else now). I included the only good night fishing picture that I got out there with the sunset in the background.
Wednesday morning:
We woke up
and had breakfast like normal. This time there was sticky pecan rolls, enough said. We immediately went out to our newly discovered fishing spot and began pulling them in one after the other just like last night. Within the first 10 minutes we had our first quadruple of the trip (there is a picture below). Almost every fish we caught was a giant and Jason’s fish box filled up very quickly and he had to drop it back at camp halfway through the morning (there is a picture below of some of the fish we caught in that first box). We continued to catch fish the rest of the morning and I counted a total of 34 fish caught this morning. I thought about the number and almost didn’t believe it because I thought it was too low considering it felt like I was fighting a fish 75% of the morning. But then I thought about it again and did the math; each fish takes about 12-15 minutes from hook on to hook off, so we battled fish for 7 to 8 hours between the four of us this morning.
On our drive back we were lucky
enough to see some pretty cool wildlife outside of the water. We saw an eagle perched on a stick in the middle of the river just waiting for the next salmon run, almost too easy for them (picture below, it is an immature bald eagle so the head isn’t completely white yet). We also rolled up on a large grizzly bear on the other side of the river that walked back away from us. Then came the real treat. We came up on a big momma bear with her 3 cubs. They ran on our side of the river about 75 yards from the 4-wheeler for a few minutes. I included two pictures below (tough to get a great one from a moving 4-wheeler but they turned out ok).
We came in for lunch and a quick nap and headed out for some afternoon fishing. The afternoon has been a little slower every day, but we still managed to catch quite a few big Silvers and fill up the box again. I included a picture of Grandpa and Jim’s double catch.
We got another cool experience out on the river this afternoon. There was
a large bear that was a few hundred yards up the river that was running back and forth across the river catching salmon. Three different times the bear caught a fish with its paw, put it in its mouth and ran up the side of the bank. The bank is at least 20 feet high and the bear makes it look like a 2-foot hill when it runs up it. You can see the high banks in some of the pictures, they are almost vertical going up.
We are headed to dinner now, new york strip. More to come tomorrow.
