A day in Bermuda
The island is more developed but as beautiful as I remember. Although it was a bit cool, the sun was warm and the skies clear. The sea had a slight chop. We sailed past the Navy Yard where the Norwegian Dawn and an RCL ship were docked and headed straight into Hamilton and docked at Front Street. Because we are a small ship we can dock in town. Otherwise we would have to take a ferry into town and that can be a nightmare, crowded with long lines.
I have a snorkel tour planned. We board our boat and it has a glass bottom. It is really windy when we get into the sound and there is a chop in this, the most protected part of the harbor, so instead of snorkeling a wreck seven miles into the Atlantic, we head to a wreck in a reef protected area and view it through the class bottom. Actually there is not much to see, some corals and large schools of Bream, Chub and Snappers. Feeding the fish results in a feeding frenzy. Would not like to be in the water with hundreds
of those guys fighting for a hunk of stale bread.
We motor to a reef area, anchor the boat and into the water we go. Let's just say it's not the South Pacific, Caribbean or Hawaii. The temperature is more like Long Island Sound in August. There is extensive reef bleaching and the only fish I saw were a small school of Blue "Linc fish". There were fire corals, sea fans a few sea cucumbers but not enough life to justify frostbite. I headed back to the boat and sat in the fine Bermudian sun and drank in the beautiful blues of the waters.
Back to the dock I met up with ML and we took a walk along Front Street, checking out some of the stores and they came back aboard. MaryLou took a glass bottom boat tour, saw the same wreck I did and probably saw more fish and was toasty and dry.
Sail away was at 5pm and we said goodby to lovely Bermuda. The real good news is that the HAL CATS, Holland America's house band, is NOT on board. Not sure why but I for one
do not miss them. They usually crank up the amps till your ears split open. This was so much more pleasant. Well......except a reggae song about a cat behaving badly went on and on and on for about twenty minutes until ML and I were ready to kill the poor creature. I actually asked the barman to TURN IT OFF and he did. Enjoyed laughing with Warren and Pierre from Toronto. We think alike and they have wicked senses of humor so we giggled our way until dinner time. Hope we meet up with them again.
Dinner tonight was in the dinning room annex and we had a table of eight to ourselves. Service was relaxed and the food very good. My cinnamon ice cream followed me here. Life is good. Bev, Jan and ML went to see the comic magician and he got four stars. I went to the cabin an took a long hot bath, also four stars.
Tomorrow starts our transatlantic crossing and our string of sea days.
We are enjoying open dining very much. We sat at a table for four last night next to a lovely couple and tonight we had a table of e
