We finally had to pack everything up and prepare to leave Yellowstone. No one wanted to go, but it was time to return to the real world, not to mention, it was time to get back to a place where our cell phone and internet connection would work. We left before 9 in the morning so we could see some wildlife on our way out of the park. We took it easy and were able to spot some elk on the shore of Yellowstone Lake. We made a couple stops to get pictures of some wildflowers that we hadn’t seen except from the window of a moving tour bus. After a leisurely drive down the twisty mountain roads, we finally left Yellowstone behind, but we will never forget that sights and sounds we experienced.
We headed to our new campsite in Miles City, MT. This had to be the most boring spot we’ve stopped at on our whole trip. Everything in this part of town was either closed or closed up and the campground was located next to train tracks. Normally, not a bad thing, except when the tracks are active. By active, I mean at least two trains an
hour, day and night. As if that wasn’t bad enough, the slide and fridge stopped working! After a phone call to the RV Doctor of Grayling, Jason was on his back under the RV. After trying to check the power going into the slide motor and checking the level of the hydraulic fluid (it was fine), Jason just gave up. After waiting an hour, Jason thought he’d just try it again. It Worked! Not sure why, but Jason suspects it’s the massive change of altitude caused some kind of vapor lock in the fluid that was released by opening the hydraulic fluid reservoir, the same that happened to all our sealed containers. The fridge was a lost cause and Jason just hot-wired it to get it to work. It worked well in Yellowstone since the outside temperature was only in the 60’s and 70’s. Once the temperature gets above 80, the fridge doesn’t like it! Something for Jason and the RV Doctor to work on when we get home.
After leaving the campsite and heading down the freeway a couple of miles, we found the rest of the city of Miles City. It was sure different and much better
than the part of town we were staying by. I guess we really were on the wrong side of the tracks!
We traveled 336 miles in 6 hours and 42 minutes. It took about an hour longer than planned since we were in no hurry to leave Yellowstone. Forgot to mention this earlier, but we were playing State Plate Bingo. Sam won the first game by getting 5 in a row. We are now playing coverall for the second and last game. Sam needs Vermont to win, Jason needs Mississippi to win, and Carrie needs both. As you can guess, we only need to find Mississippi and Vermont to have found all 50 states. We aren’t counting DC since DC isn’t a state, only a state of confusion.
