Oxbow bend
My favorite view in the whole world! It’s amazing how much sleep you need when on the go all day. By 8:30 at night I’m tired and by 9 it’s bed time. You’d think one would wake up at 5 am, not to be. We usually rolled out of the sack about 7 and by that time the sun was just starting to dance on the tips of the Tetons. It is dark in the woods where Pennelope is and of course quiet, because it’s still quiet hours, so there’s no choice but to sleep in. Besides, we’re on vacation!
All this is leading up to say that we slept in this morning. After our wonderful coffee we had oatmeal walnut pancakes and were off to Oxbow Bend.
I must digress a moment. Denise has taken on some chores that have made her invaluable. In the morning and the evenings too she takes Oscar on his walks and gives him a good workout. Then after breakfast she washes, dries and puts away all the dirty dishes and cleans the counter and sink. How wonderful to find your coffee cup clean and in the cabinet in the morning. Another chore is keeping Oscar warm at night, not her favorite….
Back at Oxbow Bend (good vantage point for pictures of Mt Moran and watching wildlife) I took pictures of the Mt and Dee was involved with wildlife watchers a little ways away. She thought for sure there was a moose or something really exciting but it turned out to be a lone trumpeter swan swimming around eating and looking pretty. There was a woman there that was SO excited to see it saying they were rare here anymore. He was too far for a good picture but we watched him in the binoculars. Better if it was a moose.
Then it was down the road in search of the old homestead. My sister Pat worked here at Colter Bay for a few seasons so she was able to get the insiders track on some of the secret places. We found it, and Oscar got to come with us to explore. What a great place to live right up against The Grand, in the summer anyway. Pictures
Then it was off to Jenny Lake and show Dee the unbelievably clear water with the most dramatic background. Well there was another boat ride available so how could we resist. We took the
boat across the lake and hiked up to see hidden falls. It was so hidden we couldn’t find it. So we hiked up to inspiration point, pictures, and sat and watched the view. Now this is no easy hike. They said ½ mile but it is all up hill and you start at 6000 ft elevation. And it’s been determined that they lie about the distance. We did find the falls on the way down from inspiration point, pictures, and they were beautiful and in among a forest of huge old trees. It is rare to see old trees here…
We grabbed a sandwich in the camper and drove in search of the illusive wildlife. At the end of the park we saw a traffic jam on the bridge and thought OH boy this must be good. I found a lucky spot to park and we hurried to see what the fuss was about. Here was a bull moose laying in the tall grass by the bridge trying to take a nap. Picture So we got to see a moose…
We took a side road home and still no more wildlife so we parked Pennelope, got ourselves a cocktail and
chair and headed for the beach. We watched the sun set behind the Tetons and solved all the world’s problems. It was the best of times.
