I had an opportunity to work out of Seattle for few months - I went there on a work assignment. My first experience in Seattle wasn't a pleasant one or I thought so . Form the airport, I shared a taxi with an Indian couple. When we arrived at my address, it was around 10 pm and I was trying to locate the apartment number through the window glass of the taxi / cab. The driver got impatient and said that we had to hurry up, so I was just got dropped without even having located my apartment building. The street was completely deserted and the cold was tooth biting. I stood there with my 3 bags not knowing where to head. I could not call my friends as I did not have an international roaming pack on my mobile. I could have gone and checked but what about my bags? I couldn't just leave them on the pavement. I stood there not knowing what to do. After some time, a guy was walking past and seeing me standing there all lost, he approached and asked me if he could help. This was my first time in a foreign country and
I wasn't sure if I could accept his help or deny it. I took a chance and told him the apartment number I was looking for. He said he stayed in the same apartment block and could show me the way. He also offered to carry my heavy suitcases. I was apprehensive but I agreed. We walked down the street for about 300 mts and I saw my friends (it was dark ) waiting for me . Ah! Thank God! I thanked the guy for he was god sent at that hour.
I settled in and slowly started exploring Seattle. Since I had gone there during winter, the weather was not great. It would get dark by 3 pm . If it was not cold, it would be drizzling. So, it would be either wet or cold all the time. But it was a nice friendly city. As I would walk to office in the morning, I would come across friendly faces smiling and greeting 'Good morning'. It felt warm and nice. Hardly spotted people on the roads walking, may be because of the sad weather. But I remember, one day, we woke up to a bright sunny day
and I saw so many people on the road that I had never seen since I had arrived in Seattle. People had just gone crazy on that sunny day !
Seattle has many places of interest. I explored as many places with my friends on weekends. We went to the
Museum of flight by Boeing which houses many flight models and flights from World war times. Then there is
Space Needle. We also took a short boat ride in the Pacific ocean back waters that gives an excellent view of Seattle Downtown. The
Public Market square in Downtown in a must visit. The Farmers market area is so lively! We could find everything being sold. Colourful and lively, I must say.
On one weekend, we planned a trip to
Mount Rainier. Somehow, we lost our way in the National park but after a while made it . Since we were a large group, we spent a significant time in the park playing in the snow and building a snowman.
Initially, I found Seattle depressing, coming from a land of tropical climate. But slowly, I started liking the place except the weather though! And the fall colours! Such
bright and lovely colours the trees wear.
