Hello friends, colleagues and supporters,
What would it be like if I didn't have to answer any emails? What if for a certain period of time I didn't have to hear my text alert, my ringtone, or an alarm waking me up 30 minutes early so I could check my email before rushing off to class? What changes would occur inside if I could spend some uninterrupted time in the outdoors, looking up into the sky, feeling the cool breeze on my face, and smelling the sea air in the early morning, smiling? What would it be like to Reset the rhythm of my life to be more in alignment with my belief system, my values, and my idea of health? These are things I want to give away in the name of health. These are aspects I consider to be vital to the healing process, and hold a vast space in my future professional career to facilitating this type of
Resetting for those with chronic health concerns, who simply need an opportunity to rest, learn, and become empowered through education and support. But we all know that you can't give away what you don't have.
I don't know what its like to be disconnected from chaos for an extended period of time. I don't know what its like to be removed from a perceived obligation to return texts, emails, and phone calls. I don't know how to RELAX! I've been in medical school for the past 4 years! I've been learning how to sacrifice my own well being under the delusion that information has the magical ability to heal others. But I know for many individuals, the type of healing needed hinges upon making changes in their lives - something that all the information on Earth is not likely help. Making changes takes an emotional investment, commitment. Biochemistry, and scientific research has nothing to do with it. And there is no amount of information obtainable which will give me the "knowledge" or "wisdom" necessary to create the type of therapeutic relationships necessary to facilitate the type of changes/healing our society is currently screaming for. So,
when am I going to learn how to be a healer? When am I going to learn how to hold a presence, to be a powerful manifestation of 30,000 years of healing heritage? NOW!
In 5 days I will take a vow not to utilize digital technology for 365 days. For one year, I will be traveling by bicycle throughout the country with no cell phone, no computer, no ipad, no ipod mini, no digital camera, and no gps system. It is my intention to cultivate my healing presence through an extended experiential process - some have called it a
vision quest, or
walk-a-bout. I prefer the Western spiritual term
pilgrimage. This
Naturopathic Pilgrimage is an attempt to gain crucial insight into the psychoemotional impact of technological chaos through my own personal digital detoxification journey. It is my vision that this will grow into less extensive, but no less powerful experiential opportunities for others as well. It does not escape my awareness that the location of this post, and future posts may seem to contradict this intention to some degree.* However it is not my mission to demonize technology, rather build a keener sense of how to relate to it, and utilize it, without being a slave to it.
I invite you to follow this incredible journey. May it inspire you.
*Posts after April 4, 2015 will be transcribed letters sent to classmates from the road.
