Several panels of deeply etched petroglyphs and faint ancient images maintain their watch over the Canaan Gap, near present day Apple Valley.
The Canaan Gap panels of pecked glyphs are spectacular, their edges cut deeply enough into the black desert varnish to cast shadows within the pale images. A herd of antelope, a coyote or wolf, an unmistakable bear and several human and/or shaman-type figures, one head-down, fill most of the panels.
The BLM’s Arizona Strip map is an excellent reference for the entire area. You can purchase a map at the BLM office at 345 E. Riverside Drive (435-688-3246).
