Today I visited Canyonlands National Park - the Island in the Sky section. Basically, a huge mesa where you are looking down into various canyons as the Colorado and Green Rivers snake their way through. Many overlooks provide excellent vistas over the world below. At Shafer Canyon Overlook you can view the many switchbacks required to reach the bottom, and for those daring souls (with 4X4s), the opportunity to explore the 100 mile canyon road below. In addition to the overlooks, I hiked the Mesa Arch to see a small natural rock arch as well as hiking the Whale Rock; a huge roundish rock resembling (to some) the shape of a whale. The Upheavel Dome trail takes you to a site of a possible meteorite strike 60 million years ago. The crater-like structure is quite large and can be viewed from 2 different observation points. To round the day off, the Grand View Point Overlook provided a majestic view of the area below.
