Day 14 Sam Rayburn, Texas TO Breaux Bridge, Louisiana

Sam Rayburn, Texas To Breaux Bridge, Lousiana

Does This Look Like A Rat ???Does This Look Like A Rat ???Does This Look Like A Rat ???

Actually it is a cross between a Rat Terrier, and a Weiner Dog. It had the bluest eyes I have seen on a dog.
This was an interesting day heading south from Sam Rayburn Texas through the city of Beaumont to the port town of Port Arthur Texas. Port Arthur is surrounded by levies, and we were able to drive a short way on top of one of them. Driving east on highway 82 we traveled beside the Gulf of Mexico for some distance. There were a lot of signs of destruction from Hurricane Rita, and there were rubble sites set up along the way to dispose of the mountains of debris left behind. Large groups of F.E.M.A. trailers dotted the landscape, and you could sense a general feeling of despair as the day wore on.
We had to wait for a ferry at Monkey Island and I talked with an old Cajun gentleman while we waited. He was pretty interesting, and had a funny looking little dog with him. He said that it was cross between a Weiner dog and a Rat Terrier. I had never seen a dog with such blue eyes, so I got a picture of it. As be boarded the ferry, we drove in a complete circle around the pilot house, and I was in the most disorganized mess I

have ever seen. There were no two vehicles pointing in the same direction. It was utter caos, but we got safely to the other side.
Next , up the highway to Lake Charles, and east on the interstate to Lafayette. Tonight we will stay at Bayou Cabins Bed & Breakfast in Breaux Bridge, which is almost a suburb of Lafayette. Our hosts are Rocky & Lisa Sonnier. Rocky is known locally as the “Cracklin King” for his ability to create large quantities of a Louisiana delicacy called Cracklin ( pork rinds) His other specialty is Boudin which is pork and rice stuffed into a sausage casing. Rocky has gained some notoriety by appearing on the Discovery Channel show “Dirty Jobs” hosted by Mike Rowe.
We checked in, and Rocky brought us a sample tasting of cracklin, boudin, head cheese, and homemade root beer. Their hospitality and friendliness was awesome, and we were soon settled into cozy little cabin #5 and sitting out back looking out over the bayou. This evening we dined at Mulates. It is an authentic Cajun restaurant with entertainment. Don had a very large helping of fried alligator for dinner. In the morning, after breakfast, Don gave

This had to be the most disorganized ferry we have ever travelled on, but they got us all on just the same, so guess that is the main idea.
Rocky one of the Calgary Stampede posters and got a picture with him in front of the giant crayfish that they use as a float in their annual parade.
