Luckenbach
Combination post office, general store and bar. This is a place of planned and impromptu Hill Country music "happenings." Everybody is somebody in Luckenbach! Wed. Mar. 14th: Today we were in Fredericksburg and went to the National Museum of the Pacific War. Their website is www.nimitz-museum.org. The whole complex covers almost 9 acres! We took out time reading and viewing everything in the beginning of the Pacific War Museum. We continued to progress through it and there continued to be more around the next corner. Eventually I needed to use the restroom and walked through the whole museum to get to the lobby where they are located. It was at that point I realized exactly how much more we had to view. After that we were a little less thorough in our viewing, so we could get through the whole museum before we either became overwhelmed or closing time arrived.
Associated with the museum are the Garden of Peace, The Memorial Wall and courtyard, and the Plaza of the Presidents. In the Plaza it recognizes the 10 consecutive presidents who served in the military during World War II beginning with Franklin Roosevelt and ending with George Bush (senior). Also there is the restored Nimitz Steamboat Hotel, which contains the history of Fredericksburg and the story of Admiral Nimitz who was born here in 1885.

The museum had a variety of media, including life size staging of different scenes. In the evening we went back to Luckenbach to listen to music. It’s a unique place to visit and “Everybody is somebody in Luckenbach.” The building that houses the post office also contains the General Store. There is an old addition on the back of the store that contains a bar where the music was occurring. There were several folks with guitars, one with a harmonica, one with a fiddle and one with washtub bass. They took turns singing or playing along. The bar/entertainment area was filled with about a dozen people, so we were in the overflow area standing in the doorway from the General Store. The door to the side yard was also open, so that was another overflow area. We met “Big Bo” Luckenbach’s World Ambassador. The website is: www.luckenbachtexas.com.
Thurs. Mar. 15th: Today we moved to a campground south of Mason and are at the Llano River RV Park. They are in the process of development and have large level pull-thru sites. They are wired for cable TV, but are not yet connected. WiFi is also coming, but in the meantime there are 2 computers, in the clean and spacious community room, that are
Cattle
A variety of cattle were grazing along the road. Loose livestock mostly meant cattle, but we did also encounter sheep. connected to the internet. Several campsites have internet access and we’re on one of them. We connect out our dining area window. We only have a 6 foot LAN cord with us, but we were able to borrow a longer one from the office.
We went into Llano for pit barbeque at Coopers. You choose your meat at the barbeque. There is a great variety and you can mix and match what you want and how much. Some of the choices were: chicken, pork, sausages, sirloin, ribs, or their signature brisket. They put it on a tray and you take it inside where they weigh it and wrap it in butcher’s paper. Included with the meal is beans, bread and sweet tea (take all you want). The loaf of bread is in the bag on the table. There are other side dishes and desserts or beverages to choose from. The cashier gives you your “plates” which are the size of a placemat and made out of a coated paper, so nothing will leak through. Then we found a space at the long picnic type tables in the dinning room and settled in for a good meal. This was George’s

Forgot to blog about this, but it was a place we visited briefly in Mason. first experience with Texas baked beans which are spicier and different, but delicious, from what we’re used to at home. I was silly and got 4 ribs, so I ended up taking 2 of them home. Maybe I wasn’t so silly, as it’s great to have leftovers.
We drove the farm road home from Llano. There were signs that warned of cattle grates and loose livestock. Yep, we passed over lots of grates and had a variety of cattle grazing along the shoulder of the road. The deer were also on the move and we saw several cross the road. The sun was setting beyond the hills as we made our way home.
Fri. Mar. 16th: We took a long car ride today and just explored the area. We had the dogs with us and stopped at the South Llano River State Park. We learned that an area by the river is closed from Nov. until April 1st due to the wild turkeys roosting there during that time. They’ve been roosting there for 100 years and would abandon that area if disturbed. We had a snack in the car while parked overlooking the river. The dogs did a
George at Fort Mason
I think the style was called a dog run style with an open area between 2 sets of rooms on each side. The fort was set up on a hill and you can see in the background that there was a good view of the surrounding area. little wading in the river, but they weren’t so hot that they wanted to go swimming (thankfully). We stopped at a picnic area/scenic overlook and enjoyed the scenery.
Sat. Mar. 17th: Today we went to Fredericksburg and had a great German lunch at Auslander to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day. We walked around the town to see areas we hadn’t yet seen. Then we drove to Wildflower Farms. I enjoyed seeing a garden center with flowers at this time of year. The different thing about this garden center was that they had a biergarten, wine tasting and ice cream. So George had something to do while I looked at plants!
We then went to Becker’s vineyard to check out their wine. The winery and tasting room are in a reproduction of a 19th century German stone house. The grounds were impressive and the tasting room had an antique bar from the Green Tree Saloon in San Antonio. We did make a purchase of some wine. Tomorrow we move to Waco.
