Day Fifteen- New Orleans to Memphis

Got up early to pick up our rental car for our week long road trip around the South. Still am baffled by how many shredded tyres are on the road. On the way to New Orleans we had it all flying back at us and had to weave around a huge piece of it while going 70 miles an hour. We stopped in at Jackson for lunch at a little restaurant in the funky hondren district. Laura and I both got traditional Cajun meals. Mine was just red beans with rice and Laura's was a crawfish (small lobster) poboy (huge sub sandwich). Jackson is pretty ugly in the city but there is beautiful houses out in the suburbs. We made it to Memphis in time to go to the Lorraine Motel where Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated. The motel has now been made into a National Civil Rights Museum. This is the second assassination site I have been on this trip and is so sad and creepy almost! The museum runs audio tours so we did that and it was really interesting and I learnt a lot, it shows the room the sniper was in on one side of the road, and then MLK Jr's room and the balcony he was on when he got shot.After checking into our hostel room we walked down to Beale Street which is famous for its bluesy culture. The strip has such a cool atmosphere, there's stalls all the way down so you can buy drinks to take with you on your stroll. As it was a Monday night it was pretty quiet and a few places were closed, though we went for dinner at BB Kings Blues Club (a famous spot where celebrities have done spontaneous jam sessions including BB King himself). There was an awesome band playing called 'The Patrick Dodd Band' and so after dinner we stayed at BB's and drunk beers and listened to the music and made friends with a few people. By the end of the night we had befriended a group of people from Milwaukee and we continued drinking at there rooftop jacuzzi on top of the Marriott! 😊
