Day 5 St.Louis to Rapid City, SD

Up and rolling by 5AM.....yep it is still dark.....go back to sleep....I'll wake you when we get to Kansas City!

This was the day that we worried about the most. It was our longest driving day....but we made it!!

We started west out of St. Louis and made a hard right in Kansas City!

We found that Highway 29 was filled with road construction so we jumped off in Omaha and found a very nice road in Nebraska. Route 30 to Columbus.

Columbus, Nebraska had a strange, but wonderful little surprise. We found Pawnee Park. There were memorials that were dedicated to just about....everyone.

There is a bell tower dedicated to Columbus and his voyage across the sea.

A monument to veterans from almost every war.

A piece of twisted steel from the world trade center with an eagle on top claiming that we will overcome the forces of evil.

The most interesting part of the park is the section dedicated to native son, Andrew Jackson Higgins. The Higgins Memorial Project was conceived, designed, and completed through the efforts of Jerry Meyer and his students at Columbus

High School of Columbus, Nebraska. YEAH!!! Real teaching...and REAL Learning...what a novel idea!!

Andrew Jackson Higgins "...designed the famous Eureka boat. The design features of this craft would be used in the LCVPs (Land Craft Vehicle Personnel) of World War II." There is a replica of one of the boats and sand that was collected by the high schoolers who worked on this memorial from all of the beaches involved in WWII. Great place to stop and stretch your legs!

Back on the road, North on 81 to Yankton, SD. Left onto I-90. First stop in SD.... Mitchell. You have to see the Corn Palace!! It is a hoot!!! A must see on any road trip. We did ask in the gift shop if they knew the best Corn Palace tour guide ever...but...sorry Grandma Vae....the women at the counter had only been there 10 years.

Back in the car....are you kidding? Nope.....sorry...only about 300 more miles to go today.....YIKES!!

We did cross another time zone so we gained an hour....great more time to drive! As we got close to the hotel, we noticed that it was still daylight....and it was 9:45....I love summer!! We did see
