Strange Mountain
Eye of the NeedleWe headed over to another part of the Black Hill's area where we saw Mt. Rushmore ,Crazy Horse and some really cool landscapes !!! We drove through mountains, beside mountains, around mountains, on top of mountains...you get the picture, the place is very mountainous........ but not the kind of mountains we have at home in the Rockies , but weird protruding rocks that are stacked up on each other coming out of everywhere !!! You have to take winding narrow roads that have hairpins turns, 15% grades and piggy tail switchbacks, that are no wider that 8 feet. I was very glad we had the car to tour around with as the motor home would never have made it. Crazy Horse is the one that really amazed us. The mountain carving was started in 1948 by a single carver ....a 40 year old man named Korczak. He worked alone for several years blasting away at the mountain....climbing up and down a set of stairs he made , with his old compressor and dynamite blasts. He refused goverment funding and worked triedlessly until he died in 1982. His family is now continuing with the carving following his detailed plans and measurements he
Mountain Tunnel
Road through the mountain left behind. When it is complete it will be the worlds largest sculptor .....560 ft high and 641 ft long. It is amazing!!!
One disappointment was we drove an hour widlife loop that claims to have a huge buffalo herd on it......we never saw a single buffalo!!! Oh well I'm sure they are there??? hiding somewhere....How do you hide 1500 buffalo??? Another part of the day that really worried me was at one point Paul pulled over and there on the hillside was a HUGE WOODCHIPPER !!! He wanted me to get out and take a picture of it, but I knew better.....stay away from woodchippers !!!! After the long day driving on crazy roads we stopped at the Praire Berry winery...they have some very different wines...one of our favorite Red Ass Ruhbarb !!! We came out of there with a case!!!
We ended the day with a great laser light show on the Crazy horse mountain ...It was awesome!!!
There is so much to see and do around this area I'm sure we will not see it all!!!
