"Just Keep Going, Just Keep Going".....that's what Dory would be saying to all of us. Eventually, we shall get to our home in the highly taxed state of New York. Why, Why? Why do we continue to live there and pay all the taxes we do. Why? Guess cause we don't know any differently but that may change in the future. Time will tell.
Okay....we are back on the RV bandwagon and ready to keep you abreast of our traveling saga. Where did I leave off? Oh, yes...I know. Yesterday, at 4:00 PM, Cory pulled our trusty rig into the RV Resort at Carolina Crossroads Campground. We have stayed here several times before.....a good campground. It's special to us because Halifax, N.C. is just down the road. Halifax is where Cory & I eloped to and got married --- 53 years ago this month. If you want to know the juicy details of that marvelous event, go back a few blogs to the one titled "53" (blog # 962340). There you will read a thorough description of how our lives became joined forever. It's a long tale so get comfy and have plenty of nourishment close by.
Moving along....after
getting settled in the park, we drove into Halifax for memory sake. The Main Street was lined with cars. Not the usual scene when we have been here before..the town always looks deserted. Took a picture of the courthouse where we got our license. Light rain was coming down. Something new as we walked down the tiny Main drag: little signs describing what the old buildings used to be....back in it's time (probably when Cory & I were there in 1964....maybe further back). When we were there in '64, the main road was dirt and the local men sat on stoops in front of these old buildings spitting tobacco into the road. What a pretty picture to remember. Anyway, we reached a new restaurant open in one of the old places. Called The Hen & The Hog. Interesting. It was packed (reason for the all the cars). Once inside, we knew there might be a problem getting a seat. Lots of men in business suits had all the seats. We spoke to the owner and she said it was the regular Masonic meeting and was closed to the public this evening. Rats! We told her our history with Halifax and
she was so nice and apologetic that she couldn't accommodate us. That's okay. We would survive. As we have for 53 years together!
We left and drove around the town hoping to locate the vine-covered bungalow where we were married by the Justice of the Peace. No luck...we couldn't even find the decaying place we found a few years back that we think could have been our wedding chapel. Such is life. Change happens. There were several old deserted mansions left in town....some for sale, the rest left for rot and ruin. Sad. We could buy one of these and get away from high taxes....we think not.
Had to drive across I-95 to get to the other side to a town called Weldon. Been here before, too. Found the restaurant where we had eaten on another visit: The Mayflower Seafood Restaurant. It wasn't quite as good as we remembered but still, it was good. For $7.95 each, Cory and I got a huge shrimp dinner. Must have been 100 fried baby shrimp, piled on top of a pound of French fries with 4 big ring hush puppies, plus cole slaw. Way tooooo much for one person...we should have
shared an order. Do you think my box to go will be okay by the time we get home? I'm planning on it! You're welcome to join us for a shrimp and hush puppy dinner. No RSVP needed...just show up. When? Not sure on that.....sometime tomorrow, though.
Back at the park, Cory chatted with a couple from Vermont, heading home from Melbourne, FL. They were driving a 2009 Phaeton (ours is a 2008). Still seems new to us but it isn't obviously. The couple liked their wine......slugging big bottles of it as we talked. Today, as we drove along, we came up behind this same couple traveling in our direction in West Virginia. Small world.
We keep waiting for Walt & Diane to go flying past us. They move right along like they have a jet pack in their RV. Last night, they were camped just about 100 miles below where we were. Two days for us...one day for them. WOW!
Now it's time for me to do another back up blog. This one will take you to Lee & Elaine's turkey party last Saturday. Lee works as a electronics person at Tropical Palms. For their party,
Halifax, N.C.
Wonderful Memories they deep fried 3 turkeys in one of those big outdoor fryers. Yuuuummmm. So good....so moist....so tender. Better than my turkey at Thanksgiving. We all brought a dish to pass. What a smorgasbord! It was like all the cooks had taken private lessons from Julia Childs. Scrumptious. A great party with wonderful friends. Much to be thankful for. Thank you Lee & Elaine for inviting us.
Let's see: right now it is 1:30 PM and we are in Maryland. Some construction along the route but not a lot and not too inconveniencing. Weather has been good the whole time. Road was real bumpy on the bypass 295 around Richmond, VA. There were other places that I moaned about but can't remember where now. We stopped at a roadside rest once to check on the small awning above our door. After a lot of jarring and banging, it sounded like something was flapping a little. Nope....nothing. Cory got out his broom and began to whack at a clothes pin he had hooked up there to divert the rains from coming down straight on our windows. He got it off with one good swing. The truckers watched his activity in wonderment.
Yesterday, with the bumping and jarring, a small drawer we installed under our dining table flew out and onto the floor. I was kept very busy picking up a thousand paper clips, pens, pencils and related paraphernalia. Good grief! We'll be making a closure strap for that sucker in the near future.
I'm done for now....finger hurting, again. Cory says his tushie hurts for sitting so long. Wish I could give him some of my padding. Instead, I've shoved a pillow under his butt in hopes that helps. He says it does. He's brave and strong.
One more stop at a TA truck stop for gas. Rats! It's $3.02/gal (diesel) here in Maryland. Cory says he's just going to top it off....he says that every time we stop. Has his trusty coffee cup in hand so maybe we'll be stopping sooner than later for the night. Fine with me. Lulu wants to get out and stretch....best she can with nothing to stretch except her head.
So, followers, I'll catch you all tomorrow for the final leg of our journey. Let me tell you... it's been so much fun having you join us this winter. You all made
it so much more merrier. Get some rest.....tune in tomorrow. Cheers! (as Colleen says to me). Lot of picture again (23)...you know the routine.
