On a beautiful summer day.
Well, the year has had its ups and downs. The city of Portland (and the most of the state of Oregon) is wonderful with lots to do and see (and drink). Living in Beaverton for most of the time really didn't help me get into the atmosphere; but, once in Portland, you feel why the city is one of the best in the country.

Grad school has definitely been a great experience. I have learned things that I would not have imagined, and I have had the opportunity to go to Colombia to do fieldwork with the grant money that I was awarded. I have gotten to travel much of the state; but I hope that the pics show it better than the ramblings below.

Not a big city (compared to other major cities in the States) Portland still has plenty to offer. It is a great beer city--you can practically find any beer imaginable. The city has the most breweries of any other in the country (look at the Wikipedia article). I have definitely taken advantage of this side of Portland. Breweries like McMenamin's, Widmer Brothers, Bridge Port--to name a few--have given the city the nickname Beertown. You

can often see a deviation of the famous bumper sticker "Keep Portland weird" read "Keep Portland Beered".

The Crystal Ballroom offers a great Friday night with "80s night". The Goodfoot has great small venue concerts, which make you feel like you were still in the basement of college town house. The Pearl District, NW (23rd Ave), Alberta, Mississippi, and Hawthorne areas are all great places to check out. But everywhere in PDX is cool...

Another side of Portland that someone should take advantage of is the Happy Hour specials throughout the city. Practically any place will have one. One of my favorite's is Jake's Famous Crawfish on SW 12th and Stark. My brother greatly enjoyed his Happy Hour there, and wanted to go back.

The Coast is great. The eastern half of the state is beautiful.

I believe if it is not the largest, it is one of the largest public parks within a city limit in the United States.
