Western Greenway Trail - Ashtabula Ohio

Biking Ohio's WESTERN GREENWAY TRAIL from ASHTABULA.

The WESTERN GREENWAY TRAIL runs from Ashtabula on Lake Erie south to Warren Ohio. It is 70 km (43 miles) through mostly rural areas.

There are number of trailheads in the north:

One is in Ashtabula at Herzog Rotary Park, 6015 Woodman Avenue.

In Austinburg, take exit 223 from Interstate 90 and turn right at the Holiday Inn, on to Austinburg Road. About a km or two you will see Gateway Church on the right. Turn in to OLD Austinburg road and go to the end: 2480 Old Austinburg Rd Ashtabula, GPS 41.803509, -80.834232.

Another option at exit 223 is to go south on highway 45 for about a mile and turn left on state route 307. In a few hundred metres you will see a DANCE HALL on your left and the trail parking lot is there. A porta potty is also at this location.

Heading south at Rock Creek you will go over the Rock Creek Trestle which spans the river below. The trestle is wide and gives good views of

the river below There is a picnic table on the bridge,

In Rock Creek there is a slight detour. The trail ends at Station Street. Turn right on Station and continue to Willow Street. Make a left on Willow and then a left on

East Water Street. The trail picks up on the right, just ahead (it is well marked)

This trail has a combination of open farmland and shade covering. At times it feels like you are miles away from civilization as you pedal along tranquil fields.

Approximately 20 km from Austinburg you come to the village of ORWELL. If you make a right on Main Street and go about 1 km to the intersection with highway 45 you will find a few fast food outlets and WOODY'S PUB and GRUB. We had lunch at this place. The Reuben sandwich was one of the best that I have ever had.

Further south at North Bloomfield there is an observation area at the Mosquito Lake wetlands. If you are lucky you will observe

much wildlife.

In Trumbull County you will come across the Stone Arch Bridge but the best view is if you take the road on the north for a few hundred metres.

Warren Trailhead: From 45 go north to 305 and head east. Trailhead will be on the left
