We did a walking tour of the formerly walled part of Charleston. We followed the AAA guide as it described various historic spots and buildings. The earthquake bolts really intrigued Carrie. Buildings after a major earthquake in the 1800’s (approx. a 7 on the Richter Scale) had almost destroyed many buildings, but earthquake bolts saved the day! Some of our pictures show these very large bolts that truly saved many historical buildings in Charleston.

It was slightly cooler than Florida, but still too hot for these northern birds! There were so many historical things to see in Charleston that there was no way to see them all in one day.

After a light lunch at Diana’s Café, we headed off for a carriage tour of Charleston. Our driver, Sherry, was very knowledgeable and funny. Her family had been in Charleston for 14 generations and nobody knew its history better! After hitting Hagen-Dasz for some ice cream to cool down, we wondered around town looking for an early “ghost tour.” Since there weren’t any until at least 7pm, we decided to hit I-95 towards Washington D.C.
Anyone who has driven this stretch of freeway will recognize the “Pedro” signs! It

was a fun way for us to pass the miles-taking endless pictures of billboards arranged every couple miles for at least 60 miles south of the North Carolina border. We also made a stop for groceries, and to Carrie’s surprise and delight, they had the Salt and Vinegar Lay’s Stax. These are Jason’s favorite chips, but they have stopped making them. When Jason joined Carrie and Sam in the store, he was shocked to see 13 cans of Stax in the cart! Well, we’re set on Stax for awhile.

Along the way, we saw a Hawaii plate and now had 38 plates total.

We drove 566 miles and arrived at our campground just outside of Washington D.C. at 2:30AM. Of those miles, Jason drove the first 450-what a machine! He wouldn’t leave the driver’s seat!
