This past weekend, I spent a couple days in Wilmington, NC where I spent 5 months on exchange last year. The whole trip up there started out a little rough as Friday, after only a few hours sleep (yes, watching the midnight premiere of The Dark Knight was not the best idea when you have to get up and be ready by 8:30am) I stumbled down to my car around 9am, cursing the sunlight, and wishing I could just go back to bed. As I approached my car, my frown got even lower as I saw a parking ticket on my windshield written exactly 5 minutes before I had gone down there. Yes, they are extremely ticket-happy here in Columbia and will nail you even if your car is parked for like 5 minutes past the meter time. So I got into my car, irritated at the world and headed off down the road to Wilmington to get there in time to go to my dive charter.
After about an hour on the road (it's a 3 hour trip), I looked up and saw clouds and thought, "oh crap!" About ten minutes later, I got the call from Aquatic Safaris
that my dive had been canceled as a tropical storm was moving in to the area. About another hour and a half later, I hit US-74 and was going 70mph and continued to go around that speed even after I hit the 55mph sign. I was within 15 miles of Wilmington when I noticed that this speedy white Envoy that had been beside me had now dropped back pretty far and this gray car was coming out of nowhere. Again, "oh crap!" as the cop flashed his blue lights inside his Chevy Impala and stopped me for going around 73 in a 55. I stopped and honestly said that I wasn't exactly sure what my speed was but I was guessing around 70 and he angrily commented on how the speed limit is 55 and walked back to his car with my license in tow. Luckily, I'm not sure HOW, but he came back and handed me my license stating only, "slow down" as I humbly answered, "yes, sir." After I got back on the road (going the speed limit) and he was out of sight, I cracked a smile and took a deep breath...then I called my sister.
About 20 minutes later, I got into Wilmington and made my way to campus but since my cousin was in class, I did some shopping and met her at IHOP a little later. Then we went to the beach where I proceeded to take an hour and a half nap (yes, napping on the beach is so relaxing). Then we went back to her apartment, showered, hung out at the poolhouse and had a barbeque, then watched The Mummy Returns and by 11:30pm, I was out!
The next day was kind of a blur as it rained, we ate a good country breakfast at Cracker Barrel, and then I took some "alone" time and walked around campus, remembering all of the time I had spent there last year. It was kind of weird being back at UNCW and kind of sad now that most of the friends I made while there are gone and off doing other things. It was nice to see it again though...especially this old bench next to the clocktower where I sat one day, ALL DAY, and read 'The Red Badge of Courage' after my history class. Ah, good times...
And then I packed
Dobo Hall
My favorite building on campus (maybe because it's the Science building) up my stuff, said goodbye to the cousin, and jammed out to some Jack Johnson as I headed back down the road to Columbia with a smile on my face. Although I really like the beach and the new SeaHawk Village apartments, I don't miss Wilmington all that much. It was time to move on to another place...another adventure...maybe another beach. So I had a smile on my face when I returned to Columbia, SC and walked back to my apartment on The Horseshoe.
The next day (Sunday), I was watching The X-Files and I kept thinking about how much I wanted to cut my hair because it's a pain and then I talked to another one of my sisters for about an hour and a half. And for reasons I'm still not sure of, I hopped in my car, went to Walmart, sat down at a beauty salon, and said, "Please chop my hair off." She took a good 6 or 7 inches off (maybe a little more) so now I have a short, bobbed, curly rug on top of my head that I absolutely love. My hair feels lighter, feels healthier, looks healthier, and isn't tangled when

I never really understood this... I run my fingers through it. And it was time to let go of my 5-year-old hairstyle and all of the hair that has grown on my head since the last time I cut it (7 years ago). Now I am off, back to work, sporting my curly rug with a smile on my face...
