Last night we had been given a tip that we could park for free at the casino in Niagara, so this is where we headed to park the car. The American side of the falls was a National Park so we were able to gain information on the best places to visit and all within a beautiful setting. We set off on a walk along the river gorge which fed the American Falls, these were fierce rapids and not an area we would recommend to go white water rafting. This brought us to a bridge which straddled the river gorge and lead us to Goat Island.
Once we were safely across to the other side we took a short trail which took us on a small bridge. This took us across to Luna Island which was a small island separating the American Falls and a smaller waterfall called the Bridal Veil Falls. This was an amazing sight and allowed us to get so close to both falls and gave great views. Once back across the other side and with temperatures in the early thirties Simon treated us both to an ice cream and a sit in the shade.
Now we were refreshed and cooled we headed to the Cave of the Winds, which we assumed was the American equivalent of Journey behind the falls. However that assumption was proved incorrect when we were handed a pair of sandals to stop our trainers getting wet. We headed down an elevator to the walkway where we were handed another souvenir poncho. Then we set about walking along the constructed walkways on the cliff face which led us to a series of walkways and viewing platforms. These were at the bottom of the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls and gave us a magnificent close up of the falls. We walked up one set of steps and not even the ponchos could save us from getting wet, so we ventured onto drier platforms. There was one level however, called Hurricane deck which was right under the Bridal Falls and it was impossible to leave there with an inch of your clothes dry so we avoided that.
Once back on the surface we continued on to Terrapin point. This was a viewing point which took you out over the Horseshoe Falls. Although you could see the whole falls from the Canadian side this was still a good viewing point. We sat down and enjoyed the views. Then we continued back over to where we had started in the morning. This gave us an opportunity to visit the observation desk which was the only point on American side you could see both waterfalls together. This was brilliant and gave us amazing views. We took an elevator to the bottom to view the gorges, which were cool.
When we went back up the top we paid another visit to the visitor centre. It was here we made an error in paying to see a 40 minute video about Niagara Falls. This was a shockingly bad film and just listed fact after fact all set before 1970's graphics.
It was here that we decided to leave Niagara to begin our drive to Macedonia. We stopped off on the way for a Denny's.
