We woke up later today as we were feeling pretty seedy. I was still in my clothes from the night before; apparently Marnee had told me several times to change but I didn’t.
We made our way on the subway down to Grand Central station to take some photos and show Nick around. It’s still breathtakingly beautiful no matter how many times you see it. From there we jumped back on the subway to E23rd/Broadway station to go and take some photos of the Flatiron Building. This was built in 1902 and because of its shape is considered to be a ground breaking skyscraper. As with numerous other wedge-shaped buildings, the name "Flatiron" derives from its resemblance to a cast-iron clothes iron. After some photos we jumped back on the subway to 16
th St Station to go and get some lunch at a place called Jack’s Wife Freda. On arrival the line was way too long so decided to have lunch at a cute little place just down from that called Spring Street Natural Restaurant. The food here was delicious anyway. After lunch we jumped back on the subway to the Brooklyn Bridge station where we got off to then walk
across the bridge. It really is spectacular. We walked all the way across taking photos and our time. On reaching the other side we got directions from a local on how to get to the station. From there we got two trains taking just over an hour to get out to Coney Island.
We met Nick’s mate Kurt just outside the station before making our way down to the famous boardwalk. We walked to a place called Tom’s to sit and have a drink. After a bit of a relax we split up for a bit; Marnee and I went to check out the theme park and Nick and Kurt went to sit on the beach. We walked round taking some photos before making our way back to the beach to go and have a sit only to realise that between 6:00-10:00pm they close the beach due to setting up the fireworks. I still wanted my photo on the sand so jumped quickly over the fence, posed and jumped back before being seen by security (or as Nick and Kurt dubbed them, ‘the beach Nazis’).
After that we met back up with the boys outside ‘Nathan’s Hotdogs’. This is a very famous chain in the USA so of course we had to try it. (Side note: They were ok, but nothing special).
After dinner we decided we couldn’t be bothered waiting a few more hours until the 9:00pm fireworks so jumped back on a train to the base of the Manhattan Bridge.
We walked all the way across the bridge which was fantastic as it was now dark and Manhattan looked spectacular all lit up. We walked for a little to the nearest subway stop where Nick said goodbye to Kurt and we said goodbye to Nick as he was heading back to the hotel. Marnee and I were heading out to meet up with Marnee’s friend Christy. We got off at Times Square and walked to Rudy’s Bar. We got a drink there then decided to move on. We walked up to a place called The Delta Grill for another drink and some food. While sitting at the bar I ran my hands along the underneath of it to see if they had any bag hooks, at which point Christy said to me, “What an earth are you doing? That’s living life on the edge touching the underneath of a bar”. Meh, I’m wild like that, haha.
It was getting pretty late but seems it was out last night in New York we walked up to Times Square just to hang out for a little longer. We then said goodbye to Christy and jumped on the subway back to our hotel. We got back about 1:30am and threw most of our stuff in our cases before getting into bed about 2:00am.
