Water taxi at the piersStarted the day working out the subway - purchased a 7 day unlimited pass - that was the easy bit. Took us a bit of time to work out which trains to use but we made it through the day and tomorrow will be easier - well fingers crossed!
Made it down to the New York piers on the Hudson River and stood in line to purchase our tickets at the intrepid Musesm on Pier 86. Waited 45 minutes in line just to get the tickets - makes no sense but the was only 3 ticket booths open - and it's a Saturday - the place is packed. Note to self - next time buy tickets online!
The intrepid aircraft carrier is a national historic landmark and has served in tours of duty in world war 2 and the Vietnam war and was the recovery vehicle for the Gemini and Mercury space missions.
Tickets were $31 each and included admission into the special exhibit of the space shuttle. This is a museum of Sea, Air and Space. As is everything in New York - the exhibits are huge and well worth the visit. We started our visit by
The Intrepidwatching a movie about the Intrepid and learning some of the history of this war ship. Lots of different sections of the ship were open so there was quite a lot of walking to do.
There were plenty of aircraft on display including the Concorde. The space shuttle "enterprise" is also currently on display at the museum. Although you can't actually go inside the space shuttle it was amazing to see the shuttle up close.
Next we visited the USS Growler - the world’s oldest existing nuclear missile-carrying submarine and the only American diesel-powered strategic missile submarine open to the public.
We had lunch at the museum in the Intrepid mess - food was fresh and reasonably priced.
Back on the subway we found our way to Church Street - which gave us views of the Freedom Tower. Looks like the building is nearing completion - standing at 1776 ft tall it is the largest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere.
There is still a lot of work going on in the area - looks like they are still completing the 9/11 museum. We previously visited the 9/11 memorial in 2011 on the 10th Anniversary of
Front view of the intrepid the disaster - a very moving experience and one everybody should do when visiting NYC.
We headed over the Century 21 - a large discount department store on the corner of Church and Dey Streets. This legendary retailer offers exceptional bargains on fashion labels and trust me it is a very busy store. People go crazy buying armfuls of handbags, clothing, shoes and just about anything else you can think of. Picked ourselves up a few bargains but nothing too extravagant. After wading our way through the 6 or so levels in the store we were absolutely exhausted. How time flies when your shopping for bargains!
On the way home we stopped by the Whole Foods Market again and got a chicken dinner to take home along with an applie pie for dessert.
Each night the streets in NYC are lined with garbage (not very appealing) but in the morning it's all clean and ready for another day. There is no space in the city to store garbage so it needs to be removed every night. Its a very different way of living - I can't imagine how it would be to never have a garden or
Lockheed A-12 Blackbird to listen to sirens and taxi horns all hours of the day and night.
Will certainly sleep well tonight - the bed here at the Hostel is extremely comfortable - and the city noise is a novelty for us at this stage!
Goodnight from the city that never sleeps!
