2008 Summer Calendar Free NYC Events
Check weekly for frequent updates.
The Seaside Summer Concert and The Martin Luther King schedule is out. Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and more exciting performances; FREE!
This calendar is in no way complete. There are literally hundreds of free lectures, films, readings, museums, street fairs and a number of other events throughout the summer that NYC has to offer its residents and visitors. I have tried to include outdoor movies, concerts and other free activities that are my favorites that I think others will enjoy, but I am biased. I live in Brooklyn. I don't have children, I rarely go to bars or clubs, and I'm not a fan of any sports events. I have attempted to list here a different type of activity each day and highlights of special concerts or other event that I strongly recommend, but use this calendar as a jumping off point and research the links I've provided to find events you're interested in.
There will be frequent updates throughout the summer, especially for events like The Martin Luther King, Jr. Summer Concerts and The Seaside Summer Concerts which list their calendar later in the summer
so keep checking back. Past performers include Lauryn Hill, Anita Baker, Billy Ocean, Boys II Men and other greats.

Mafrika Music Festival,
10:00 AM-9:00PM, Marcus Garvey Park, Fifth-Madison Ave/East 120-124th st
African music will light up Harlem on June 1 as the MAFRIKA Music Festival comes to town for the third year.
The festival in Marcus
Garvey Park will feature ten bands, as well as a display of traditional art and dance. Last year’s gathering drew more than 2,000 people.
“This is the real roots of rock and hiphop,” said festival executive director Abdel Kader Ouedraogo. “Africa is the mother continent in so many ways, and one of its gifts to the world is its incredible music. We want to share this gift with New York.”
The festival will be held at the bandshell near the 122nd Street and Mt.
Morris Park West entrance of Marcus Garvey Park. The choice of location is significant as Marcus Garvey, a black empowerment leader of the early 20th century, was an evangelist for reminding African-Americans about the place where their ancestors lived.

Mavis Staples; Stephanie McKay, Gospel and Soul
7:00pm-10:pm Celebrate opening night with two women who cross the generations of
gospel and soul. Presented in association with the Museum of African Art. A
member of the legendary Staple Singers, Mavis Staples has taken her roots in
gospel and given them an uncanny boost of soul. She was awarded the Americana
Music Association's (AMA) "Spirit of Americana" Free Speech Award in 2007. She
has collaborated with countless soul, gospel and country singers, and is the
go-to singer for artists who want spine-tingling heart added to their mix.
Staples' deep voice and spiritual resonance make her one of the most important
singers to grace stages today.[]Stephanie
McKay has resurrected true soul
through bold songs like her flawless first single and title track, "Tell it Like
It Is," shows off her gutsy style and seamless voice. A child of the Bronx, she
has contributed to projects with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Tricky, and Roy Hargrove.
With a lyrical wisdom beyond her years, Ms. McKay is proof that classic soul can
be reincarnated through the generations.

2008 Coney Island Mermaid Parade
HUGE parade that is I think even more fun than the annual NYC Halloween Parade. It begins at 2:00pm, but get there early, the parade attracts thousands of people and it can get really hard to find a spot. The theme is obviously mermaids, but you can find all kinds of creative variations; I've seen some outrageous, amazing costumes, like The Wizard of Oz mermaids, Hula Hoop mermaids, S&M dominatrix mermaids and their crawling fish boy mermen dressed in full black leather and chains, and a real fire engine with ten sexy stripper girl mermaids. But the craziest costume I've ever seen is the guy who is practically naked except for a gold spray painted sock covering his, um, fishing pole. Oh, he had on matching gold dandals. But no fish theme, go figure. Coney Island is located in the southernmost part of Brooklyn. (1000 Surf Avenue) Take the D, Q N or F train to Stillwell Avenue. http://www.coneyisland.com/mermaid.shtml

NYC Gay Pride Parade
The March began as an annual civil rights demonstration beginning the year after the Stonewall Riots in 1970. Over the years its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to the illness, violence and neglect. It has also evolved to include being a celebration of our lives and our community. That's all really beautiful, but be prepared; the parade is also an all day and night freakfest of S&M groups, gorgeous trannies dressed in magnificent gowns, wigs and costumes, and a few naked joggers. Be afraid; be very afraid, and be prepared to be converted because this is one party filled with beeyootiful and sexy mf'ers. 5th Avenue & 52nd St. to Christopher & Greenwich St. Best place to be is anywhere on Christopher Street. 12pm until your makeup melts off.

Junot Diaz, Aleksandar Hemon, Spoken Word by Authors
7:00pm-10:00pm Authors from the Dominican Republic and Sarajevo read from their
novels chronicling the modern immigrant experience.[] Junot Diaz is the winner
of the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the Sargeant First Novel Prize for
his debut novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao (Penguin Group). In Oscar
Wao, a nerdy, sexually frustrated teenager tries to grow up under the watchful
eye of his mother, grandmother and sister, and a family curse that just won't go
away. Alternating between New Jersey and the Dominican Republic, Junot's own
birthplace, this often hilarious and heartbreaking novel illuminates the modern
immigrant experience through fictionalized footnotes and multi-generational
storytelling. [] Aleksandar Hemon is the author of The Question of Bruno and
Nowhere Man, which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award.
Born in Sarajevo, Hemon visited Chicago in 1992, intending to stay for a matter
of months. While he was there, Sarajevo came under siege, and he was unable to
return home. Hemon wrote his first story in English in 1995. He was awarded a
Guggenheim Fellowship in 2003 and a "genius grant" from the MacArthur Foundation
in 2004.

ENSEMBLE: THE RITE: REMIXED The mercurial experimentalists DEERHOOF, "the most
creative band in indie rock today," (LA Weekly) forge a distinctive sound out of
sophisticated improvisation, fierce dissonance, and weirdly catchy melodies.
They're paired here, via the forward thinking Wordless Music Series, with a
world premiere by METROPOLIS ENSEMBLE, led by Artistic Director/Conductor Andrew
Cyr. The Rite: Remixed is a collaboration with composers and live electronics
producer/performers Ryan Francis, Leo Leite, and Ricardo Romaneiro, who
re-conceptualize Stravinsky's monumental The Rite of Spring through the lens of
the latest sounds and technology from electronica. The work combines keyboards

DESCRIPTION: A full day of today's premiere gospel artists. Presented in
association with the Gospel Music Channel and Globe Star Media.[] After many
years singing with the award-winning gospel group Commissioned, Marvin Sapp
launched his celebrated solo career. His soulful, R&B laced voice has earned him
fans from both the Gospel and secular communities; and he has garnered countless
acknowledgements, awards and nominations. In 1999 Sapp was awarded the Giants
Award and the Frederick Douglass Awards, both for his philanthropy and community
contributions. Since 1992, he was consecutively acknowledged with multiple
Grammy, Stellar, and Dove Award nominations.[] Pastor Hezekiah Xavier Walker,
Jr. is the Grammy Award-winning pastor of Brooklyn's Love Fellowship Tabernacle.
Hezekiah Walker & The Love Fellowship Crusade Choir have released 15 albums that
have met with critical acclaim. Nominated in 2001 for the NAACP Image Award for
Best Gospel Artist, on the merits of Love Is Live!, the group has also won
Grammy Awards for that album as well as for Live in Atlanta at Morehouse
College. In 2007, the Essential Hezekiah Walker was released.[] Gospel legend
Dorinda Clark-Cole, of Clark Sisters fame, is an award-winning vocalist known

household word. Clark-Cole's self-titled debut won two Stellar Awards and a Soul
Train Award and she has performed with many Gospel greats, including Kirk
Franklin.[] Kurt Carr's career is built upon the vision of inclusion, as
exemplified on his six albums that boldly incorporate international influences
as diverse as a South African choir, Scottish bagpipes, an Armenian accordionist
and an Indian sitarist. Famous for penning the universal hymns "The Presence of
the Lord is Here" and "In The Sanctuary," Carr's songs have been translated into
nine languages. He has won a total of ten Stellar Awards for performance and
production.[] The De

Gospel talent. The upbeat Christian ensemble's mission is to create an urban
sound to connect with the nation's youth in a spiritual, uplifting way. They
have already been nominated for two Stellar Awards and shared the stage with

ARTIST: Santogold [] Diplo [] Plastic Little [] A-Trak [] Kid Cudi
GENRE: electro-pop, hip hop, ghettotech, thrash, baile funk, and grime
DESCRIPTION: Musical pace-setters weave electro-pop, hip hop, ghettotech,
thrash, baile funk, and grime to give a glimpse of where music is heading.[]
Santogold is the name of the project fronted by Santi White, a songwriter,
master of improvisation, and a group unto herself. Her eerily intelligent tunes,
speckled with a DJ's wizardry, are already receiving airplay in Afghanistan and
Beirut. Her first single is "Switch and Graeme Remix" and her newest album is
due out soon. [] Philadelphian DJ Diplo is characterized by his eclectic, often
80s-oriented mashups, mixtapes, and live sets. On his full-length solo effort,
Florida, his sound achieves a cinematic tone. Born in Mississippi, Diplo picked
up various styles such as dirty south, crunk and Miami bass, which often appear
deep in his mix. [] Plastic Little is a group of rappers that don't give a
****!. Little Jayson Musson, Kurt Hunte, Jon Folmar and beatmaker, Michael Stern
are bringing back the days when hip hop was completely irreverent, made in the
basement, and not for the lame. Untamed, they use a myriad of influences
including a hearty sample from The Cure on "Get Close." Plastic Little has
released two albums, She's Mature, and Little Plastic, which is an import
only.[] A-Trak is a Montreal-based DJ and turntablist best known for his work
with Kanye West. He won the DMCs World DJ Championship in 1997 at the age of 15,
the youngest recipient of the award ever. A-Trak also runs his own label,
"Fool's Gold," and the label's first signing is Kid Sister, who is playing
SummerStage on June 14.[]Out of the blue a kid from Cleveland who comes to
Brooklyn is the new "it Kid." Kid Cudi, (better known as Man on the Moon) is a
minimalist rapper with otherworldly inspirations. His unique hooks and
unorthodox sentiments beg for categorization of which there will be none. Call
it "alternative rap" to make it easy, but coming out of the Fool's Gold camp
(Kanye West/A-Track) with enough of an early buzz to start a fire, the first
single, Day ÔN Night is as different as
night is from day.
