Traveling on Xmas day is not as busy, and I got through security pretty quickly. Flight times on Qantas:

-NY to Los Angeles: 5 hrs
-LA to Sydney: 14 hrs
-Sydney to Melbourne: 2 hrs

I saw about 4 movies: 1408, Bourne Identity, Simpsons Movie, and Borat
Slept a lot, read a bit of the CFA curriculum (ok, about 10 pages on the entire trip there because the layovers were pretty boring).

Checked in at Hotel Discovery Bakpak on December 27. It's actually a hostel despite the "hotel" in the name. We had a mixed 8 person dorm but it wasn't as bad. People respected each other and the showers were cleaned twice daily. We stayed up until 1:30am looking for a Great Ocean Road tour and booked it.
