We started the day with a trip to New Jersey to a place called Hoboken on the other side of the Hudson River via PATH rain for only $2- per trip. When we got there we walked up to Washington Avenue to find it has been renamed as Carlos Bakery Way. Why you might ask ?? For anyone that knows their finer things it's because of the TV Show "Cake Boss" of course. This is where the famous Buddy makes his extravagant cakes. There was a queue just to get in to the shop and some people told us they had waited for an hour and were still not in so we did not want to wait.
Instead walked back towards Hudson River to find somewhere for lunch. "Biggies" looked OK and after checking menu in we went. Well some restaurants have appropriate names and this one definitely does.Nice atmosphere inside with big bar area, lots of TV’s on with all the sport you could want Wimbledon, Baseball, Tour De France) but let’s get back to the food.
The last time I had fries this big was in Memphis when I had the Hunker Hunker Burger at the Elvis
Cafe. The dish I had was a Meatballs Sandwich and was huge. Luke had some bid sandwich as well. Kerry had a seafood salad in a big dish and after about 20 minutes barely got below the top of the bowl. I had a Souhampton Beer to celebrate the town of my birth. Kerry orded a side order of Onion Rings which was not needed, but this was the only dish that was actually finished by anyone !
Weather was now sunny and warm at 30 degrees. We went for a walk down to the River's Edge to walk off some food, and got some nice photo's of Manhattan from that side. We saw some funny things as well. First we saw a bunch of mothers doing a fitness routine with a personal trainer. Nothing unusual about that ? Well they all were pushing prams in the workout and some nearly stacked the prams so I'm not sure the babies appreciated the thrill. The other thing we saw was some young ids in pre-school who were out for a walk. hey were tied to a long piece of rope (so they don't get lost I guess). A teacher at
the front and one at the rear and off they went. Weird.
We caught the PATH back to 33rd Street and then walked a few blocks to Times Square where we went to Discovery Centre to see Terracotta Warriors and Spy - The Exhibit.
Luke is doing an Ancient History Project on the Terracotta Warriors so it was good for him to see this. We saw lots of artifacts and about 15 actual warriors.
The Spy Exhibit had lots of stories about US and Russian spies as well as hands on exhibits to show how they did recodings and cameras as well as transmitting data and secrets. There was a cool laser game too where like Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible you have to walk through about 10 rows of moving laser beams in 20 seconds.
We had an afternoon snack at the Discovery Centre and you will never guess what it is called?
It's the Cake Boss Cafe and they had all the same cup cakes and souvenirs they had a Hoboken (without he queues !).
Later we went to get Luke another T-Shirt (Air Jordan from Champs) and back to room to
pack. Late night Pizza slice as lunch was so big did not need anything else. We finally walked through Bryants Park which is a beautiful area and they were getting set up for free movie night being the Wizard Of Oz. We saw some guys playing this game like Bocce, and they were relly talented. It's actually called Petanque if anyone wants to google it.
Tomorrow we kiss NYC goodbye. It has been hot but lots of fun, and there is more to see next time. One regret was not seeing a lot of Central Park as we were planning to do the horse and carriage ride but it was too hot for the Horses every day we were there. Perhaps that and the 9/11 memorial are things to do next time we visit the Big Apple.
