Well I had a much better time in New York compared to when I first arrived two weeks ago!
Most of my time was spent walking all over the city and then adding the calories back on by eating heaps! Most tourists would catch several buses/trains/taxis a day, I managed 4 ½ days with only two rides on the subway - crazy, but that’s me : -)
After my overnight bus from Toronto to New York, I checked into my hostel (way, way better than the previous NY one - conveniently located close to Times Square and hot showers!) and then went for a nice long walk from 30th street up to Times Square and then all the way downtown, over the Manhattan Bridge and over to Brooklyn - over four hours solid walking.
It was worth it as the welcomed clear skies (but still near freezing temps) offered great sight-seeing opportunities, especially of Manhattan as I crossed the bridge into Brooklyn.
Whilst in Brooklyn I checked out the Brooklyn Museum and its Gilbert & George exhibition which was very interesting.
From there I, very sensibly, caught the train into the funky Lower-Eastside area and had
dinner at Moby’s café ‘TeaNY’, a cool vegetarian café I visited during my 2004 trip.
It was then time to catch my first gig for 2009 (and my first in many weeks) - ‘The Antlers’ are a band I’ve been aware of for a year or so now. They played all new stuff, so I only knew one track but I still enjoyed the gig despite extreme fatigue (having not had a proper sleep in over 36 hours).
After a much needed sleep, on Sunday I made a walk back into the Lower-Eastside and had a late breakfast at TeaNY (yummy vegan pumpkin cheesecake) and did some shopping (a new pair of shoes - a well overdue purchase).
Whilst in the area, I walked further downtown to the WTC sight and was shocked to notice that barely anything has been done since I was there in 2004 - when will the towers be finished ???
A snack at the Peanut Butter Company (pure heaven!) and then a movie (awesome Swedish vampire more ‘Let the right one in’) followed by a super yummy vegan tapas dinner and I was pooped!
Monday was, you guessed it, more
walking! This time way uptown to check out the 24 hour Apple store on 5th Ave, the Guggenheim museum (cool building but I didn’t go inside) and then back mid-town to the Museum of Modern Art where I spent the rest of my day checking out all the fancy art work (Warhol, Pollock, van Gogh, Miro, Picasso etc), strange contemporary pieces and some really cool visual pieces.
And that was basically New York for me, Tuesday was spent shopping, walking around, eating and packing and then this morning it was a few last minute preparations (hampered by the rain that started Tuesday night and has not let-up since) before I head off to JFK airport and get on my plane to Manchester - feeling excited but a little sad too.
No time to rest when I get to Manchester - as soon as I get settled in my new place (X fingers I like the place and my new housemates), early the next morning I head down to London to catch up with Vaughan and Lucy for the weekend and then its back to Manchester and work on Monday morning - arghhhh!
Next update from the UK
I suppose ;-)
