The day starts at 3:30 AM. Elinor doesn't think that we need to get up that early, but somehow she's not aware of how long it takes her to get ready in the morning. Any morning. She's just ready in time for the taxi (now called Riide which has in identical signup screen to Uber, but its still the local taxi companies). Oh yes, and Elinor had insisted on making a fruit salad to take with us and eat at the airport before going through security. That means that we're rushing to eat it (and not finish it) before getting in the long line for security. Turns out the long line moves along quickly, and we do have a few minutes to sit before they start boarding. Not rushed, but not sitting waiting, either. And quite happily, it is an uneventful flight.
We actually had more time between disembarking and boarding call for the next leg. The flight from Saskatoon was early. For me, the worst time to wait for a flight is when I'm tired. I can't focus to read, can't hold anything resembling a conversation. Fortunately, I'm travelling with Elinor, and she can hold a conversation in her sleep. I won't share those stories here. She starts talking with the young men in line in front of us. They're travelling to New York just for the weekend. At my age, I wouldn't think that short a trip would be worth the effort. These gentlemen had a list of things to do and the enthusiasm to get it done. Good luck, guys!
We got here, and Blair and Rhonda's phones got us to the hotel without any problems. People from Vancouver that we met at the subway stop weren't as lucky, they were headed to Manhattan and our stop was the last one before maintenance that was shutting down part of the subway. It was funny, because when Elinor and I got off the subway, I said "See You" to them, and immediately thought "that's stupid, we'll probably never see them again." Two minutes later, they were standing beside us on he platform, having been told this was as far as they could go. I don't know what that means for Elinor getting around tomorrow. I guess it depends on where she heads.
We checked into the hotel, and then Elinor raced to get us to Dumbo park so she could take pictures as the sun was setting. We then raced to try and find a grocery store. Then we're in a residential area in a strange city in the dark and trying to get google maps get us back to the hotel. We did, finally. But I never got my bearings of North and South, and felt disoriented through a lot of the streets. I've got to wonder about the people that never seem to know compass directions. Do they live their life disoriented, or does it just not matter? Inquiring minds want to know, but not very badly. I though Elinor got a number of great photos. I'll try and get some attached to this Blog.
