Up the road to Buffalo we stopped at this little Amish restaurant. I have recently read a book all about the Amish community so I was quite happy to delve into this new cuisine. In the end, I don’t think it was quite authentic. I enjoyed my grilled cheese sandwich but there was no shoofly pie as I had been hoping for. As we took several side roads through New York instead of the main highways, it took longer but was well worth it. The mountains were incredible and the foliage so different from that in Colorado—much fewer pines and tons of deep red leaves. We got up to Buffalo by mid afternoon and had time to clean up and relax for a while before our cousins got home from work. On the first evening, as it was raining, we went out for a driving tour of Buffalo which is one of the two major cities in the States to have had a larger population at the turn of the twentieth century than today. We then ate at the original buffalo wings restaurant. The wings were great and it was so fun to finally get to hang out with Rob and

We headed out to Niagara and then for lunch in Canada (after assuring Francesco could return). We walked all around the quaint little town of Niagara-on-the-Lake where the shops were plentiful and the landscape stunning. After a nice lunch we made our way to one of the local wineries to taste the local specialty: ice wine. Made in winter from a harvest of frozen grapes, ice wine. Made in winter from a harvest of frozen grapes, ice wine is sweet and succulent and, of course, served cold. Yum! We returned home as the rain clouds rolled in and managed to get to both the grocery store and pick up a bottle of wine before the drops could fall. I prepared dinner and then we all relaxed for a couple of hours. Francesco and Rob continued their video soccer war…boys. We had debated staying another day but as the drive was several hours and we had already taken up our cousin’s weekend, we decided to head out to our next leg of the journey, New Jersey.

While we were living in Florida, we rented a house from a marvelous couple: Marge and John. They were so wonderful to us, always leaving us bags of vegetables on our door knobs and having us over for tea, breakfast, dinner and midnight snacks. We came to love them like family and truly looked forward to seeing them again on this trip. On the drive down from Buffalo, we called ahead to let them know about what time we’d be arriving and were made to promise not to stop for dinner as they would be waiting. Marge prepared Francesco’s favorite soup and afterward, as usual, there was a plethora of sweets from which to choose served with tea and milk. Janice, Marge’s daughter and Christina, another friend who we met at Marge’s in Florida came over and we spent the evening talking, laughing and looking at pictures from our trip thus far. The next day began with squash omelets (delicious), bacon and toast and then was filled with errands and city tours. Francesco tiled the borders of a few bathrooms of Marge’s apartment house. We went

home and she had prepared her customary feast of ravioli with homemade meatballs and sausages along with a delicious antipasto salad. Friends and family filled the house and we had a lovely evening. Tuesday morning we went to Atlantic city where Francesco and I played the quarter slot machine together, setting a $5 limit. Shortly thereafter, we won $50 (yahoooooo!) and were wise enough to cash out and leave. That was basically it for that part of the trip. After so much travel and excitement over the last couple of weeks, it was just great to spend some down time and do normal day to day activities. It was tie to go, however, and so we left our car, grabbed the local train and headed out. Well, deep breath and on to NYC.
