I think apologizing for not updating this blog often enough is a little bit of a waste of time. I have no idea whether anybody is actually reading this shit so an apology seems oddly self serving.
Anyway, so yeah, after new york i drove down to New Mexico for what was going to be around a week, maybe two. Turns out a spent a relaxing 6 weeks chilling at Carmen's, swimming in the pool and eating wings. Their were a few highpoints, as is wont to be the case on this journey. I knew I was going to have a good time when i arrived and was promptly informed that their was this 'comicbook convention thing' going on that weekend and that i should check it out. My curiosity piqued i got on the web and checked out the line up of who/what was going to be there. One name in particular caught my attention, a certain englishman by the Nam of Jeremy Bulloch. Now for anybody who knows me well, or has been into the nerd-vana that is my bedroom will know that i like star wars. I mean, i really really really really like star wars and
their is a special place in my heart for Robert (Boba) Fett. The causal link between Jeremy and Boba is that they are in fact the same person!!!!! So i did in fact attend this convention and i met the great man, he signed a whole bunch of shit and we just chatted about shit for at least half an hour. Mostly because nobody else their knew who he was, their loss i guess. Side note i also got one of my favorite artists to sign a copy of one of my favorite green lantern comics, massive plus.
A few days after this, after i had returned from my enlightened state, a suggestion, admittedly a drunken one, was put to me that a trip to Vega was in order. Alcohol aside, the suggestion was a good one and two days later me and the delightful Erin 'Tasty-cheesy pasta' Baragiola were on the road for a three day whirlwind tour of the city of sin. It being mid June it was a pretty quite time in gambling capital of America but a great time of drinking, wandering and of course gambling was had by all. It's important to say that
anybody planning on going to a casino should really learn to play Craps. Apart from the fact that rolling dice is pretty much the most fun thing in the universe, it has the best odds in the casino and your money will last a long time. Makes for a good night and winning is not actually that difficult. I was $400 after one night.
After Vegas we decided to do something as far from the Vegas experience as possible. We joined some of the New Mexico crew for a few days of camping in South Western Colorado. The only real thing to note is that if your GPS decides to send you up a 4WD track at 1am on the side of a mountain, chances are that it's sending you in the wrong direction.
Back in Albuquerque the 4th of July was celebrated next to the pool and by a night at the ballpark seeing the local division one team - The Albuquerque Isotopes (yes, of The Simpsons Fame) get beaten by some stupid team from Texas. The fireworks show was memorable and it was, all in all, a damn good day.
After another week of pretty much straight up freeloading off Carmen I decided to get a move on and do some shit. Texas was the target, 40 degrees was the temperature and the problem at hand, no air-conditioning in the green machine.
Note for First time players #8 and Bad Weather Report #6 Long haul drives in extreme heat is a bad idea, that's really all their is to it. I don't want to go into the details, it's pretty much a recurring stress dream of mine.
After being in Texas for a grand total of about 18 hours I had a gun in my hand. No Joke, No lie and No exaggeration. While hanging out with Sara was totaling awesome-sauce the high point was not only going shooting with shotgun, pistol and rifle. But also being able to go shooting with Laura Morrisey, yeah you know the one, tiny little girl, studies
law dates some guy called phil. Yeah I hung out with her for a few days in Dallas which was a damn good time. We hit up the JFK museum which was surprisingly enjoyable and i would recommend it to anybody and everybody that is willing to listen. While this is a disturbingly short summation of my time in Texas this does not mean i didn't have a great time, i did, Texas fucking rocks. There is nothing like going to a local college bar and getting drunk to some live, local West-Texas Country. It's a freaking good time that i'm sure very very few tourists really have the opportunity to experience and which even fewer will ever understand.
Surprising Erin for her birthday was pretty fun, the look on somebodies face when you really truly surprise them is truly priceless. Another few weeks after this were spent chilling with New Mexico until the inevitable truth finally hit home. My Visa runs out on the 31st of August, under pretty much no circumstances can i be in the country beyond that time. So, with much sadness i saddled up the green machine and began the 3500 mile (5600 Km) trip to the great white north. This trip would involve more than a few stops which would prove more than just a little memorable.......
