Viva Las Vegas! October 20th
Once again we awoke early after a rustling, crinkling nights sleep wrapped in silver survival blankets. I pottered about outside sorting out bits in the car until 8.30am to which I knew the shop was open on the campsite. So wandered over to get some milk for breakfast. I arrived at the shop door at 8.32am pushed it and it was locked although could see the KOA lady wandering about inside so I patiently waited. Three minutes later, still no unlocking of the door. What is this woman doing? Does she not realise the time? Two mins longer and still no opening so with a mild frown I tap on the door window and then point at my watch. She shouts back "It's 7.37am! We don't open for another hour!" Grr! Couldn't believe it, me and Bowks didn't think we lost an hour until we hit Nevada but apparently they don't do daylight saving in Arizona so times are different. We packed for an hour and at 8.30am once again we were able to go to the shop to get milk for breakfast. Then on the road to Vegas in what was our last day
in Jarbo, our faithful car.
Jarbo drove his last leg superbly. We stopped at the Hoover Dam briefly to stretch our legs and to look at the giant construction work that is presently on going with the building of a new highway and bridge right over the top of it. Whilst there we witnessed our first real echo of British accent from 4 or 5 different people, we really do sound awfully proper! We then drove over the hill and into Vegas, dropped off Jarbo at the airport collecting our print out slip of 3,742 miles covered. Well done Jarbo!
Nicole (Bowks brothers girlfriend) soon arrived to pick us up and take us back to her house in North Las Vegas. As we drove through Vegas I began to get excited , not about the fact I was about to turn 30 in the next three days but more so that it was time to drink and gamble! Vegas looks just like it does in the films and I was ready and better still so was Bowks!
We soon settled into Nicoles house and met her housemate and friendly cats! Nicole then took us out for tea
at the Hash House A Go Go. Doddy was in his element when on the menu they were offering beer in a brown paper bag. Once again he could realise his life time ambition by drinking beer in a can in a brown paper bag, but this time in a restaurant. You should have seen the look on his face and then to top it off they bought over a plate of bacon to go with it, apparently it's complimentary.
As we looked at the menu we were warned about the portion sizes advising us they were best to share, they weren't wrong, the plates were massive! Doddy attempted to eat what must have been the worlds biggest meatloaf all to himself and although made a valiant effort but it all proved too much and the remainder had to be taken home in a doggy bag.
The following morning we updated blog. Late afternoon we ate some dinner accompanied by wine, sangria and (Doddy's first) Jager bomb, enough to get everybody ready for a night out on Freemont Street in Vegas. We went to the casinos and Nicole started to show us the ropes, not that Doddy needed
much showing, $1 in, a couple of pushes on the button and $160 out! A brilliant way to start the evening. We garried on gambling and tried some deep fried Oreos and Twinkies that come highly recommended. It was 8pm and time for the magic show out on the main plaza in which I was picked to be the female assistant fitting the bill of bold, courageous and glamorous of course! The trick went very well you'll be pleased to know.
We finished the night dancing the Monster Mash feeling rather tipsy to say the least! The next morning Doddy was feeling a tad delicate but nothing a cup of coffee and water couldn't sort out.
After a telephone call from Rory and Morgan saying that they'd arrived safe and well in Vegas but had been drinking beer since 8am and were unsure on what to do so we set off to go and meet them.
